Being an assistant in nursing is going to be a rewarding start in a growing industry. A nursing assistant is going to be responsible for helping nurses offer care to patients in a variety of settings such as nursing homes and hospitals among others. There is hospice care as well which is where people who have a certain amount of time left to live stay. There are even some places that have CNA's work in home care settings to help patients with basic activities. For the most part, you are going to be the one offering basic care and primary care to patients under the supervision of a LPN or a RN.
Typical Work Day
In regards to what a typical workday for a CNA is, you will be given certain patient rooms when you begin your shift. You will begin by learning what care is needed and any special instructions. Depending on where you are working, you may have as few as 4 or 5 patients, to as much as 10 or more. This can also depend on the staff that is currently working. For home care positions, you will have one patient at a time.
You will begin your shift by doing rounds. This means going around and checking on patients. Getting their vital signs, if you work in a hospital you will be cleaning up the rooms as far as any dirty dishes that need to go to the kitchen or refilling beverages when needed for patients, and in some cases you will be bathing patients so you will distribute towels and washcloths to patient rooms to have on hand when the time comes.
Other duties you are going to be responsible for include recording patient food intake as well as helping patients to get dressed and get to the bathroom. You may be required to change the bed sheets as well especially if they are soiled. You should typically change them each shift in case they are too wrinkled or get dirty throughout the day. Y will have to ensure that your patients are comfortable throughout the shift and get them anything they may need. You will be in charge of changing the position of your patients every 2 hours if they are not able to do so on their own. This prevents bed sores as well as pressure sores.
In some cases, you will be responsible for helping doctors or nurses with patient assessments and exams. Sometimes something a nurse does will require an extra set of hands and this is where you will come in as well. You may be asked to help set up equipment for transferring patients. Working as a nursing assistant can be demanding as you are going to be always on the move and on your feet for long periods of time. You are the one that the patient has the most contact with so you should try to monitor and report any changes to a supervisor or nurse.
