Lift the Burden - Jobs not Debt

NUJ members are being asked to support the ICTU day of protest on Saturday 9 February. Barry McCall, NUJ president, and Gerry Curran,Cathaoirleach of the Irish Executive Council, have called on members to support the rallies throughout the country under the Congress banner.

?

Six demonstrations (see details below) are being organised on that day by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, to call for the ?64 billion of private banking debt to be lifted from those living and working in the Republic of Ireland.

?

Barry McCall, said: "This huge private banking debt was transformed into a sovereign debt. Now everybody in the Republic of Ireland is paying the massive bill, which was run up by private investors and speculators. It is astonishing that we are being penalised because the European Central Bank refused to allow senior bond holders to be burned.

?

"This cannot be allowed to continue. People living and working in the Republic are suffering bitterly under the austerity measures being forced on them as a result. There is no chance of economic growth or revival while this continues. The message must go out loud and clear to those bodies that are demanding repayment of this private banking deb ? 'lift the burden now'.

?

These six demonstrations give every NUJ member the opportunity to add their voice to the huge number of people who want the debt to be lifted from our backs."

?

Gerry Curran said:"The Republic of Ireland currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union. This gives us the opportunity to get our message across loudly and clearly on an international, as well as a national, scale. That message is simple ? what we need are jobs, not debt.

?

"I would encourage NUJ members to attend the rallies in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Sligo and Waterford.?

?

"Every day our members use a variety of media to communicate with the general public to let them know what is going on in the world. Now, as trade union members, it's our chance to be part of the story by getting out on the streets and having our voices heard as citizens."

IAMBRIGITTE: Product Review: J&C Super Clean Solutions Brush ...

When I decided to pursue my love for makeup, and that was when I enrolled in makeup school, ?my concern back then was what are the good makeup brands out there. ?I read reviews or asked makeup artists who have been in the business for a long time. ?Well, there was a time (there still is) when I went thru trial and error just to try out the product/s myself and find out whether it's good or not.

After investing on makeup, I then realized the importance of having a good set of brushes. ?Gone are the days when I would think that tools don't matter. ?They really do. And back in those days, the good brushes that I know (and most people do recommend), don't come cheap. Good thing there's Charm brushes nowadays! (wink) ? And so, apart from making sure that my makeup would stay bacteria-free, I also have to make sure that my brushes would not only stay bacteria-free, but also in tip top shape! ?

And so, the hunt for a good makeup brush cleaner began!

I've tried a lot of makeup brush cleaners, but my favorite is still the J and J Baby Milk Wash! I love how it gently cleans my brushes, and of course, the delicate milky scent. ? ?But I don't always have access to water to clean my brushes most especially when I'm out in gigs. ?And besides, I don't have all the time to wait for my brushes to dry when my next clients is already sitting on my makeup chair waiting for me to start working on her. ?I can't just say, "Sorry dear, my brushes are still wet...wait lang ha!?" (laughs) ?Of course, I have a few extra brushes, but what if it's one of those days when my brain failed me and just forgot to bring them all? ?Patay na! ?So it's just great to know that there are brush cleaners that can help you spot clean your precious brushes. I've tried a number of brands already, but it certainly won't hurt to explore new products. ?Besides, it's always good to have options...tama!?

^_^

So here's my newest companion during my makeup gigs that certainly doesn't fall short of my expectations whenever I need my brushes to get cleaned...fast!

J&C Super Clean Solutions Makeup Brush Cleaner

It's a no-brainer makeup brush cleaner that cleans your brushes without the need to rinse with water. ?It's quick-drying too! ?And geesh, with its spearmint scent, I am absolutely addicted to it! ?The first time I've used it, I wanted to use it as a gargle na! ?(laughs) ?To some, the scent might come too strong, but for me, it's absolutely LOVE!

It comes in a sturdy, plastic bottle so careless people like me won't have to worry. ?It has an easy-to-use spray pump (I've tried some which can be a pain to use and I hate it!) that dispenses the right amount of product..so no wastage too!

ingredients

It does have alcohol but my brushes remain soft after. ?I've used some that left the brush hairs so stiff that I had to wash my poor babies again with my milk wash. ?But with this cleaner, brushes are ready to rock in no time! ?

It does get rid of cream-based makeup, but it does take a bit longer to do so. ?We all know how cream-based stuff can be such a pain to get rid of. ?So what I do is I wipe the brush with wet wipes then use this cleaner after. ?

spot-cleaned my Charm brushes!

The (beauty and) brains behind this product are the superwomen of ARC PR, Jenny Yrasuegi and Celine Gabriel-Lim. ?With their busy schedules, they are always on the lookout for stuff that will not only deliver good results, but will also work in a snap! ?This makeup brush cleaner is just the beginning, as they will be coming up with more products soon. ?

For Php395 per 120ml bottle, I think this has got to be the cheapest brush cleaner I've tried that works. ?

The digital map is not the territory

WHEN Google Maps launched in 2005, the reaction in some quarters was puzzlement. Why was a search engine getting into cartography? The answer became apparent as it rapidly enhanced the service with navigation, Street View, local business listings and so on. Google doesn't just want to catalogue the online world; it wants to know where everything is in the physical world, too.

Eight years on, that goal looks within reach. Google and its competitors now offer maps of the depths of the oceans and the far side of the Moon. They help their users to navigate everywhere from side streets to shopping malls. And they have revolutionised the way we think about location - putting us, rather than some culturally significant but geographically arbitrary prime meridian, at the centre of the map (see "Uncharted territory: Where digital maps are leading us").

This innovation has made digital maps all but indispensable to millions of people. They provide an alternative view of the world: one that offers suggestions about directions and places. They are also becoming one of the primary tools for exploring the wealth of civic data now available about our surroundings, from crime statistics to traffic flows.

When the maps turn out to be wrong, though, we feel betrayed: witness the rare bloody nose dealt to Apple when it recently unveiled a buggy iPhone map app.

Such trust issues hint at bigger battles to come. Many of today's wondrous maps are powered by deep-pocketed companies, each claiming to offer the ultimate in verisimilitude. But many details of their construction are trade secrets. This matters because all maps have their quirks and biases. Consider the Mercator projection, breakthrough mapping of a different age: it helped make global exploration possible, but grossly distorts the land area of different countries.

More than 80 years ago, the philosopher Alfred Korzybski observed that "the map is not the territory". A representation of reality, no matter how faithful it may seem, is not the same thing as reality itself. We should be mindful of that distinction as digital mapping evolves.

Dual Canadian-U.S. citizens can conquer tax ... - Financial Post

The resum? of a U.S.-born, Toronto-based electrical engineer we?ll call Matt is a monument to his success. With a distinguished academic background and a string of successful jobs within his company, he has a salary of $168,000 a year plus bonuses that can be high as $26,000 a year. His wife, Jennifer, as we?ll call her, has a part-time job as an office manager with a $24,000 annual salary. Their combined gross income, as high as $218,000 a year, pays for a comfortable way of life. Question is ? can he sustain it in retirement?

Matt?s problem and that of his wife, Jennifer, also a U.S. citizen with permanent residence in Canada, is that the laws governing RRSPs and their equivalent U.S. retirement plans don?t mesh very well. Matt, 48, and Jennifer, 46, intend to stay in Canada and, in any event, they have been here almost all their adult lives.? The focus of their planning therefore has to be to build up their RRSPs, taking account of U.S. rules that do not allow contributions to the plans to be deducted from their taxable worldwide incomes, while making use of the US$92,000 exemption of foreign ? that is, Canadian ? income for the income they report on their U.S. basic 1040 tax return.

With careful accounting to ensure they comply with the tax laws of both countries, they can build their RRSPs and avoid tax on the sums Canada allows to be deducted from the worldwide income they report to the Internal Revenue Service. The reason ? they will get a Canadian federal foreign tax credit as well as an Ontario credit for sums over the federal credit. In the end, they come out with their RRSPs working as intended and no U.S. tax penalty.

Family Finance asked Graeme Egan, a financial planner and portfolio manager at KCM Wealth Management Inc. in Vancouver, to work with the couple to focus their financial plans, enhance returns from their investments, and plan retirement.

Investment goals

Family FinanceThe couple has two investment targets ? one, to add money to their three children?s education funds, and two, to fund their own retirements. Their family RESP has a $115,000 balance. It is being used to pay for one child, age 20, in a professional curriculum in university and another child, 17, who has just started first-year university. The two older students cannot receive the Canada Education Savings Grant of the lesser of $500 or 20% of annual contributions, for the CESG ends at age 17. But the couple can contribute $2,500 a year to get the maximum $500 CESG for their 14-year-old for the next three years.

Matt puts $22,000 a year into his RRSP. If he maintains this rate of accumulation for 12 years to age 60 and grows the account, now $258,000, at 3% a year after inflation, he would have $689,400 in the account. While the United States does not recognize RRSP contributions as deductions from taxable income., a U.S. taxpayer can elect to defer tax on this income until it is actually paid out. In other words, on payout, the U.S. tax treatment will be the same as Canada?s.

Their non-RRSP assets, which total $170,000, would grow to $242,400 at 3% per after inflation to year at Matt?s age 60, with no further contributions. Add an expected inheritance of $150,000 and the sum of non-registered capital would be $392,400.

Retirement planning

If Matt and Jennifer downsize their $1-million house at retirement at Matt?s age 60 to $500,000 and invest what could be a $600,000 balance ?? allowing for $100,000 growth in value in the next 12 years ? then combine the $600,000 with their future non-registered capital, they would have about $1-million. They should observe the U.S. tax rule that only the first $500,000 of any capital gain on the house will be tax-exempt.

Assuming financial assets grow at 3% before inflation adjustments and they exhaust all capital by Matt?s age 95, $1-million of non-registered assets would provide $61,000 a year, and their $689,400 of registered assets would support a draw of $45,000 a year, for total investment income of $106,000 before tax.

If Matt starts his Canada Pension Plan benefits at his age 65, he would receive the maximum $12,150 in 2013 dollars. They can take benefits at age 60, but the loss of 0.6% a month for each month that benefits are taken before age 65, or 36% for five years, would be costly. There is no need for early application for benefits, Mr. Egan says. It should be noted that having left the U.S. in 1990 when they were in their early twenties, they would have negligible entitlements to Social Security benefits. If Matt takes his CPP at 65, he would receive $12,150 a year in 2013 dollars. CPP benefits for Jennifer, based on her interrupted work history, cannot be calculated, Mr. Egan says.

When each is 67, both will be entitled to full OAS benefits, currently $6,553 a year. If pensions are split, each will have annual income of $65,628 in 2013 dollars before tax. They will avoid the OAS clawback that begins at $70,954 in 2013. After 30% average tax, they should have combined disposable income of $7,657 a month. Their present expenses of $6,000 a month net of retirement and other savings, childcare costs and debt-service costs would be covered.

?The cost of being an American in Canada is not higher total tax, for careful observance of reporting rules usually means that one gets credit for what are usually lower American income taxes, but in the time and cost of compliance,? Mr. Egan says. ?Most of Matt?s income will be exempt and that will be key to his tax costs in the U.S. In the end, careful observance of rules of both countries will keep his tax bill to no more than what it would be in Canada without exposure to American taxes.?

Organic ferroelectric molecule shows promise for memory chips, sensors

Friday, January 25, 2013

At the heart of computing are tiny crystals that transmit and store digital information's ones and zeroes. Today these are hard and brittle materials. But cheap, flexible, nontoxic organic molecules may play a role in the future of hardware.

A team led by the University of Washington in Seattle and the Southeast University in China discovered a molecule that shows promise as an organic alternative to today's silicon-based semiconductors. The findings, published this week in the journal Science, display properties that make it well suited to a wide range of applications in memory, sensing and low-cost energy storage.

"This molecule is quite remarkable, with some of the key properties that are comparable with the most popular inorganic crystals," said co-corresponding author Jiangyu Li, a UW associate professor of mechanical engineering.

The new carbon-based material could offer even cheaper ways to store digital information; provide a flexible, nontoxic material for medical sensors that would be implanted in the body; and create a cheaper, lighter material to harvest energy from natural vibrations.

The new molecule is a ferroelectric, meaning it is positively charged on one side and negatively charged on the other, where the direction can be flipped by applying an electrical field. Synthetic ferroelectrics are now used in some displays, sensors and memory chips.

In the study the authors pitted their new molecule against barium titanate, a long-known ferroelectric material that is a standard for performance. Barium titanate is a ceramic crystal and contains titanium; it has largely been replaced in industrial applications by better-performing but lead-containing alternatives.

The new molecule holds its own against the standard-bearer. It has a natural polarization, a measure of how strongly the molecules align to store information, of 23, compared to 26 for barium titanate. To Li's knowledge this is the best organic ferroelectric discovered to date.

A recent study in Nature announced an organic ferroelectric that works at room temperature. By contrast, this molecule retains its properties up to 153 degrees Celsius (307 degrees F), even higher than for barium titanate.

The new molecule also offers a full bag of electric tricks. Its dielectric constant ? a measure of how well it can store energy ? is more than 10 times higher than for other organic ferroelectrics. And it's also a good piezoelectric, meaning it's efficient at converting movement into electricity, which is useful in sensors.

The new molecule is made from bromine, a natural element isolated from sea salt, mixed with carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen (its full name is diisopropylammonium bromide). Researchers dissolved the elements in water and evaporated the liquid to grow the crystal. Because the molecule contains carbon, it is organic, and pivoting chemical bonds allow it to flex.

The molecule would not replace current inorganic materials, Li said, but it could be used in applications where cost, ease of manufacturing, weight, flexibility and toxicity are important.

Li is working on a number of projects relating to ferroelectricity. Last year he and his graduate student found the first evidence for ferroelectricity in soft animal tissue. He was co-author on a 2011 paper in Sciencethat documents nanometer-scale switching in ferroelectric films, showing how such molecules could be used to store digital information.

"Ferroelectrics are pretty remarkable materials," Li said. "It allows you to manipulate mechanical energy, electrical energy, optics and electromagnetics, all in a single package."

He is working to further characterize this new molecule and explore its combined electric and mechanical properties. He also plans to continue the search for more organic ferroelectrics.

Duncan gets 14th NBA All-Star nod; 2 Bulls chosen

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tim Duncan was selected to his 14th All-Star game, Spurs teammate Tony Parker is joining him, and the Chicago Bulls also had two reserves chosen Thursday for next month's game in Houston.

Joakim Noah and Luol Deng were picked from the Bulls, who have stayed in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race despite the season-long absence of point guard Derrick Rose. Noah is one of five first-time All-Stars for the East, along with New York's Tyson Chandler, Indiana's Paul George, Cleveland's Kyrie Irving, and Philadelphia's Jrue Holiday.

Miami's Chris Bosh, picked for his eighth All-Star team, rounded out the East squad.

West forwards David Lee (Golden State), LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland) and Zach Randolph (Memphis) all were picked for the second time. Houston's James Harden was chosen for the first time and joins former Oklahoma City teammate Russell Westbrook, headed to his third straight All-Star game.

Duncan wasn't chosen last year for the first time in his career but has bounced back with a terrific season at age 36, averaging 17.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots, his best statistics since 2009-10.

The co-MVP of the 2000 All-Star game joined a group that includes Michael Jordan for fifth-most selections. Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett, both voted to start, and Shaquille O'Neal all were picked 15 times. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the career leader as a 19-time All-Star.

The reserves were voted by the head coaches from each conference, who had to select two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position. They were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.

With centers Chandler and Noah, East coaches passed on Brooklyn's Brook Lopez, the leading scorer for a resurgent team that is right behind the Knicks for the Atlantic Division lead. Perennial All-Stars Deron Williams and Joe Johnson of the Nets also missed out, as did Boston's Paul Pierce.

Lee gave the Warriors their first All-Star since Latrell Sprewell in 1997, but coach Mark Jackson and his team hoped for more. However, Stephen Curry wasn't selected despite averaging 20.9 points. He's the league's eighth-leading scorer and the highest one who won't be in Houston for the Feb. 17 showcase.

Lee called his selection "bittersweet" because Curry ? the first person to send him a congratulatory text ? wasn't picked.

"In our practice facility, there's that All-Star chart and it stops at '97 and there hasn't been any since. So the whole team was really excited with the improved record this year and to get one or both of our guys on there," Lee said. "I'm really excited to be the one that goes and represents our team. I wish Steph could be a part of it and maybe he'll still be able to. I'm just very, very excited. It's been a long time for the Bay Area fans. Not only to have an All-Star, but to be winning games."

Voted as East starters by fan voting along with Garnett were Miami's LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, New York's Carmelo Anthony and Boston's Rajon Rondo.

The West starting five is Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard of the Lakers, Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, and Clippers teammates Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.

The Clippers were hoping for a third All-Star, but sixth-man Jamal Crawford wasn't picked.

Commissioner David Stern would choose the replacement if any players are injured.

Randolph leads the NBA with 27 double-doubles and becomes the first Grizzlies player with multiple selections.

"It is truly an honor to be named by the NBA's coaches to the 2013 Western Conference All-Star team," he said in a statement. "I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to playing with the best players in the world."

The leaders of the teams with the best winning percentage in their conference through games of Feb. 3 will be the coaches. Miami's Erik Spoelstra has the inside track on the East spot, while San Antonio's Gregg Popovich and the Clippers' Vinny Del Negro are battling for the West honor since Scott Brooks, whose Thunder have the league's best record, is ineligible after coaching last year.

Irving, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and Holiday were rewarded for outstanding individual seasons even though their teams are well below .500. Irving is the Cavaliers' first All-Star since James, the only other East player averaging at least 20 points and five assists.

"It's one of the best days of my life," Irving said Thursday night, shortly after also being honored as Cleveland's professional athlete of the year award at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards. "It's a big deal for me and it's a big deal for the city of Cleveland to be picked as an All-Star for the first time. I'm turning 21 on March 23 and to be with those guys, to see those names on TV, that was truly a blessing."

The 22-year-old Holiday, the youngest All-Star in franchise history, is averaging 19.0 points and 9.0 assists but feared the 76ers' 17-25 mark would work against him.

"I thought so. I definitely thought so. I think anybody else probably would, too," he said while watching a Philadelphia Flyers game. "We're not getting on a winning streak or anything like that. I just tried to stay positive and not talk about it."

Crowdfunding for Real Estate | bubbleinfo.com

From the pyramids to the Empire State Building, the world?s largest structures have typically been financed by the superrich. New York-based Prodigy Network, best known for marketing the Trump SoHo hotel condominium, is now trying a different model: It?s bringing crowdfunding to real estate, soliciting thousands of investors to buy slices of a skyscraper in exchange for a share of rents and property appreciation. ?The big difference from traditional real estate is that instead of buying into a fund with a pool of assets, people invest in a single asset,? says Rodrigo Ni?o, Prodigy?s founder and chief executive officer. ?It lets them control the risk.?

skyscraperProdigy has wanted to try crowdfunding almost since its founding seven years ago but didn?t get a chance until it stumbled on the derecho fiducario, a little-known financial instrument in Ni?o?s native Colombia that allows individual investment in isolated real estate projects. In Colombia, Prodigy has crowdfunded a building called BD Bacat? that will be the nation?s tallest. About 3,100 investors kicked in $171.8?million (COP308 billion) of the $239?million needed to build the 66-story skyscraper in downtown Bogot?. Investors can also buy and sell shares through a resale program, which functions like a secondary market.

Prodigy is currently under contract to buy 84 William Street in downtown Manhattan for $58?million. It plans to invest an additional $32?million. Prodigy says it intends to raise some $26?million in equity from individual investors in 11 countries. FTI Consulting, based in West Palm Beach, Fla., will ensure that Prodigy complies with the U.S. tax code, as well as anti-money-laundering laws, when accepting money from outside the country. ?Instead of buying crappy condos in South Florida, this allows international investors to invest in real markets like New York and in assets that actually make sense,? says Ni?o, who was raised in Colombia and studied economics in Switzerland. Prodigy says William Street investors will see returns of 15?percent, compared with 21?percent for investors in BD Bacat?.

The company?s investors don?t yet include Americans because the U.S. allows only accredited investors?generally those who have assets of more than $1 million?to buy equity in private firms. That will soon change: The Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, signed into law last April, allows anyone to invest as much as $2,000 or 5?percent of their income or net worth, whichever is greater, in closely held ventures. The Securities and Exchange Commission is still working on rules for investor safeguards required by the act.

SEC guarantees may not be enough for leery U.S. investors, says Dan Fasulo, a managing director at Real Capital Analytics. ?It?s hard enough to develop a property down the block,? Fasulo says. ?How are you going to do it sitting 3,000 miles away??

Gustavo Gonzalez, a Colombian civil engineer who bought two shares of BD Bacat? in 2010 for 101?million pesos ($57,178), says the returns speak for themselves. Since his purchase, based on an advertisement he read in a local newspaper, the shares have appreciated by about 43?percent. ?I like the idea that this is going to be the highest building in the country,? he says. Just as important, ?I thought it was going to go up a lot, and that?s what happened.?

The bottom line: Once the SEC finalizes its safeguards, ordinary American investors will be able to buy a slice of individual properties.

The Citizen Science of Climate Change: We are not bystanders

Superstorm Sandy prior to the 2012 Presidential election put climate change on the mind of many voters. Earlier this month, a Federal Advisory Committee of 13 collaborating agencies released a Draft Climate Assessment Report for public review. The data show the climate is already changing: rising sea-level, ocean acidification, damage to infrastructure, and impacts on human health, water resources, and agriculture. Because the data make it hard to remain optimistic, many were thankful to hear Obama say at his inauguration, "We'll respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations."

One overlooked aspect of the data, however, can also give us reason for optimism. Although credit for the report is given to 240+ scientists and engineers who compiled the evidence about global climate change, the backbone of the knowledge presented arises from efforts of unsung (and unwitting) heroes: people who collect weather data. The coordinated, cross-generational, collective nature of the public data-collection efforts reveals an unexploited strength in our society that should give us hope.

It's often unclear where climate change data come from; like many others, I had assumed it's all generated by satellites circling the earth and buoys floating in the ocean. While those technologies play a role, data on the key variables of temperature and precipitation have been, and still are, collected by otherwise ordinary people. Thus, evidence for climate change is not because "scientists say so", but rather because the collective observations of people show we have shorter, warmer winters, and longer, hotter summers, periods of extreme heat lasting longer than any living American can recall, and rain in extremes: either heavier downpours or droughts. Separately, people across the country have noted these observations in their backyards. Scientists have pooled the observations to reveal widespread patterns.

The new assessment is an impressive synthesis of the most up-to-date studies in the peer-reviewed literature about climate change. It details negative impacts in a wide array of economic sectors, from maple syrup in Vermont to oysters in Washington. Each study that involved rain, snow, and temperature measurements drew those data from the U.S. Cooperative Weather Observer Program: a citizen science network.

The Program is not often referred to as citizen science, probably in part because it started generations before the term was coined, but that's what it is.

Public contributions of weather measurements date as far back as the availability of instruments to measure weather. When founding our nation, Thomas Jefferson wanted to deputize one person in every county in Virginia to collect temperature and wind data twice a day. The Revolutionary War pre-empted these plans.

The concept kept recurring. In the late 1840s, Matthew Maury wanted farmers to collect weather data and share them via the telegraph so that his naval office could aggregate reports and make forecasts. He adapted the idea from a maritime system he coordinated, whereby weather information crowdsourced from merchant ships was turned into wind and current maps that quickened ocean travel. The Civil War pre-empted his land-based weather plans.

In 1870, President Grant formed an agency to coordinate a volunteer weather observer program. The program eventually became the U.S. Cooperative Weather Observer Program of the National Weather Service. Since then, gathering standardized weather data has been a tradition in many families at 12,000 sites in the U.S. Take a look at the National Weather Service newsletters honoring long-term service and you'll see Terrell Phillips of Douglas, Georgia, who took over observations after his father passed away so that their weather station has operated for a continuous 50 years. You'll see Sara Waddell of Woodruff, South Carolina, who received a 25-year length of service award, following in her parents' footsteps. Her mother had observed since 1956 and her father since 1987. And we can thank Robert Hoppe of Broadwater County, Montana, for 40 years of service; he comes from a farming family that has recorded since 1939. Together, people contribute about one million volunteer hours annually. A core of about 1,200 of these sites has continuous history ideal for climate change research.

It would be nearly impossible for me to accept the burden of the report's conclusions - climate change is not only real, but accelerating - if it weren't for the one glimmer of hope that I see in all knowledge coproduced via citizen science: the power of the coordinated, collective efforts of curious, dedicated people. The discovery and understanding of global climate change, which has been so hotly debated, was possible because we are not a country of bystanders. We are participators. When the weather service asked for help, people helped. Because of participation, we have an inkling of the threats that we face.

I don't know the solutions to global climate change. You probably don't either. But any solutions will certainly involve collective action. It was our uncoordinated collective action, in the form of burning fossil fuels, that has made the climate change problem. And it was our coordinated collected action that informed us of the problem. We all will be forced to deal with climate change, so the question is: which type of collective action do we prefer? The coordinated, dedicated, collective efforts embedded in family traditions and daily practices as seen in citizen science illustrate the attributes and possibilities we need to find the best path forward. As President Obama said, we won't let down our children or future generations--indeed, we'll teach them to participate.

Officials: Car bombs in Iraq kill 15, wound dozens

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say a string of car bomb attacks in and around Baghdad has killed 15 people and wounded dozens.

Police officials say the attacks started on Tuesday morning when a parked car exploded in Mahmoudiya, killing five people. The town is about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the Iraqi capital.

The officials say a suicide car bomb later struck near a security checkpoint in the northern Baghdad suburb of Taji, killing six. Another explosion in the northwestern neighborhood of Shula killed four people.

Medics in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Violence has fallen since the peak of insurgency in Iraq several years ago, but lethal attacks still occur frequently.

Local attorney accused of offering legal counsel in exchange for sex ...

An Indianapolis attorney is accused of offering legal counsel to prostitutes in exchange for sexual favors.

Christopher Hollander faces one count of patronizing a prostitute.

According to officials, Hollander sent a text message to who he thought was an escort. The phone had previously belonged to a woman involved in prostitution, police said, but an officer was now using it.

Hollander said that a ?former client? had told him the escort had been arrested and that he had ?quite a bit of experience with these cases? and would be ?happy to help.?

A few days later, officials sent an undercover officer to an area hotel to meet with Hollander. While at the hotel, Hollander discussed several aspects of Indiana?s prostitution laws, court documents said. Hollander also talked about how police frequently use hidden recording devices to gather evidence not knowing that that was what police were doing at the very moment. He went on to said it was difficult to beat cases when there was a recording of the investigation, police said.

When the undercover officer asked about how much Hollander would charge,? he reportedly began caressing the officer. According to court documents, Hollander told her that he wasn?t ?expecting anything, but you know? if you wanted to talk about things for me too, that would be okay.?

Court documents said Hollander stood up and tried to kiss the officer. He then began to unbutton his clothing. That?s when police entered the room and placed him under arrest.

Police said Hollander told them he was an attorney and would likely lose his license. He reportedly asked them if they could give him a ticket instead.

Hollander eventually agreed to ?say everything to give [police] a case I can?t get out of.? He then admitted guilt, police said, saying he had hoped to have sex with the supposed-escort in exchange for providing legal services.

The 3rd Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival Starts Tomorrow! | Sean's ...

    DSC_0009

Vancouverites love their chocolate.? Our city boasts some of the best chocolatiers on the planet, and now ?

    resampled_HCF_finalPoster_2013websafe

The VANCOUVER HOT CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL returns for its 3rd year!
    January 19 ? February 14, 2013

Taking place at cafes, chocolate shops and bakeries across the city, the Vancouver Festival was the first and largest of its kind in North America, and most likely, the world!

    WHAT?S NEW :

Joining the 23 participants for the first time this year is Beaucoup Bakery, Chocolate Arts and Soirette Macarons & Tea.? Also new, Vancouver-based Blenz Coffee will be joining the Festival?s? Food Artisan Support Program? by sponsoring local small food producers at two of their cafes.? Along with hot chocolate drinks created just for the Festival, Blenz Alma will be featuring custom-ordered chocolate bars created by Chef Wendy Boys? Cocolico Chocolates. While Blenz Thurlow will be serving sweet meringue cookies infused with flavours from the Bittered Sling Collection by mixologist Lauren Mote and Chef Jonathan Chovancek of Kale & Nori Culinary Arts.

And for the first time, the Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival is welcoming a satellite participant. Reubens Chocolates of Port Moody will make their Festival creations available to hot chocolate lovers living outside the City of Vancouver.

French Made Baking, Leonidas Chocolates, The Juice Truck and Bel Cafe are just four of the 14 participant vendors returning from last year. See them starring in the Festival?s new VIDEO.

    WHAT?S FUN :

With over 60 flavours to choose from, it?s going to take at least a month to try them all. Although one dedicated festival goer has sworn to sample them all in one day. That?s impressive, but so is the creativity on display in the 2013 lineup.? Some of the edgiest hot chocolates include:

    * Terra Breads?? ?Stand Up and Stout?? ? a chocolate drink blended with R&B Brewing Stout and topped with beer-flavoured marshmallows.

    * Soirette Macarons & Tea?s? ?The King?s Cup? is a rockabilly combo of peanut butter and banana ? an ode to Elvis.

    * Chocolate Arts?? ?When Pigs Fly? hot chocolate will come adorned with bacon-flavoured marshmallows.

    * And Cocoa Nymph?s ?The Ayala? is a jasmine-tinted hot chocolate with juniper or gin-like marshmallows.

    * Beaucoup Bakery?s ?Burning Clove? suggests a smoky love poem to chocolate.

    * While Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France?s ?Rose of Ecuador? kisses Ecuadorian chocolate with the juice of crushed rose petals.

    * Thomas Haas Chocolates? ?The Lumberjack? will be crafted with hot chocolate infused with maple syrup that?s been aged in Bourbon barrels.

    * And Bella Gelateria?s? ?The Gold Medal? will be a pecan and maple syrup-flavoured hot chocolate based on the gelato that earned owner James Coleridge 1st place at last years International Gelato Festival in Italy.

But no worries if you are a chocolate purist. Many of the vendors will also be offering serving at least one drink made with unflavoured, hi-cocoa content chocolate only.? Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie Cafe?s ?One in a Million?, for example, will be made from Maranon, the world?s rarest chocolate.

Some hot chocolates can even claim to be healthy, such as Gem Chocolate?s ?BC Blue Booster? ? a blend of high anti-oxidant content cocoa and blueberries.? While Schokolade Artisan Chocolate?s ?Mount Fuji? combination of chocolate, ginger and matcha might well ward off a visit from the seasonal flu bug. The Juice Truck will specialize in non-dairy hot chocolate drinks for those who are lactose intolerant, and most vendors will gladly substitute dairy for coconut, soy milk or almond milk on request.

    WHAT?S MORE:

Regardless of flavour, all drinks are guaranteed to be deliciously photogenic, and in that light, festival goers are invited to enter photos of their drinks to an online TweetUp contest that could earn the lucky winner gift certificates from all participating vendors. It?s a $500 VALUE and a great way to extend the Festival throughout the year.

For the festival-goer?s dollars, all drinks will come with extra goodies that either reflect each shop?s culinary specialty or were made by supplier partners such as Erin Ireland?s To Die For Banana Bread and Beta 5 Chocolates. Partial funds from all Festival sales will be donated to restaurateur Mark Brand?s new charity project,? A Better Life Foundation, a project that aims to create a self-sustaining meal program for people in assisted living and low-income housing on Vancouver?s? Downtown Eastside.

Yes, the lights of Christmas are gone and it?s going to be a long grey stretch until spring, but If anything can banish the chilly gloom of January, this cheerful Festival can.
After all, it?s a scientifically proved fact that? ?CHOCOLATE MAKES YOU HAPPY.?

Nanowires fuel breakthrough for solar energy

Jan. 18, 2013 ? In the latest issue of Science, researchers from Lund University in Sweden have shown how nanowires could pave the way for more efficient and cheaper solar cells.

"Our findings are the first to show that it really is possible to use nanowires to manufacture solar cells," says Magnus Borgstr?m, a researcher in semiconductor physics and the principal author.

Research on solar cell nanowires is on the rise globally. Until now the unattained dream figure was ten per cent efficiency -- but now Dr Borgstr?m and his colleagues are able to report an efficiency of 13.8 per cent.

The nanowires are made of the semiconductor material indium phosphide and work like antennae that absorb sunlight and generate power. The nanowires are assembled on surfaces of one square millimetre that each house four million nanowires. A nanowire solar cell can produce an effect per active surface unit several times greater than today's silicon cells.

Nanowire solar cells have not yet made it beyond the laboratory, but the plan is that the technology could be used in large solar power plants in sunny regions such as the south-western USA, southern Spain and Africa.

The Lund researchers have now managed to identify the ideal diameter of the nanowires and how to synthesise them.

"The right size is essential for the nanowires to absorb as many photons as possible. If they are just a few tenths of a nanometre too small their function is significantly impaired," explains Magnus Borgstr?m.

The silicon solar cells that are used to supply electricity for domestic use are relatively cheap, but inefficient because they are only able to utilise a limited part of the effect of the sunlight. The reason is that one single material can only absorb part of the spectrum of the light.

Research carried out alongside that on nanowire technology therefore aims to combine different types of semiconductor material to make efficient use of a broader part of the solar spectrum. The disadvantage of this is that they become extremely expensive and can therefore only be used in niche contexts, such as on satellites and military planes.

However, this is not the case with nanowires. Because of their small dimensions, the same sort of material combinations can be created with much less effort, which offers higher efficiency at a low cost. The process is also less complicated. In the Science article, the researchers have shown that the nanowires can generate power at the same level as a thin film of the same material, even if they only cover around 10 per cent of the surface rather than 100 per cent.

The research has been carried out as part of an EU-funded project, AMON-RA, coordinated by Knut Deppert, Professor of Physics at Lund University.

"As the coordinator of the project, I am very proud of such a great result -- it has well exceeded our expectations. We will of course continue the research on nanowire solar cells and hope to achieve an even higher level of efficiency than the 13.8 per cent that we have now reported," says Knut Deppert.

MCX Crude Oil opens higher wait for breach of 5185 resistance

    By Sreeram Iyer

Asian stocks generally fell, with the regional benchmark index heading for its first loss in three days, amid signs markets are overbought and as Japanese shares retreated as a stronger yen dimmed the outlook for export earnings.

Japan?s Nikkei share average closed at a 32-month high, as persistent weakness in the Yen boosted demand for exporters? shares. China?s shares closed up on Tuesday at a 7-1/2-month high, but the pace of growth abated after Monday?s aggressive rally.

Hong Kong stocks closed 0.14 percent lower on Tuesday on a lack of direction from Wall Street and as traders took profits following recent strong gains.

The BSE benchmark SENSEX breached the 20,000-mark twice during trading on Tuesday, though closing finally at 19,986 amid sustained fund-based buying following government measures to bolster economic growth and steady inflow of robust quarterly earnings.

The Indian Rupee weakened on Tuesday, hurt by dollar demand from oil firms and companies, but demand for the local currency from custodian banks prevented a sharper slide, and closed at 54.50.

Oil prices were trading near the lowest level in almost a week in New York after U.S. crude stockpiles increased. Total U.S. crude stockpiles rose by 46,000 barrels last week, according to the API, with last week level showing 1.314 MB.

EIA Crude Oil Stock is a measure of change in crude oil storage and it?s released by the Energy Information Administration. This report indicates the oil demand and the price volatility.

Crude Oil prices were on a small downtrend during most of the day and evening sessions, though being on a range-bound movement. However, the NYMEX prices witnessed a good downtrend post the MCX market closing yesterday, registering a low of 93.22 in the early morning hours of today. The prices have, perhaps, bounced back a little and presently on a small recovery movement and trading close to the yesterday?s support-turned resistance level of $ 93.61.

Crude Oil prices have opened up today on a conservative mode, opening on the similar value from where it left off yesterday, perhaps not showing any signs of a rapid fall in the early morning hours today, and was showing, at 10 am, 5128 for January contract, and 5173 for February contract, and NYMEX prices at $ 93.58, which is incidentally higher than yesterday?s opening level.

There may be some very good volatility/activity anticipated on account of some news/data releases today which are happening during the Indian afternoon and evening sessions.

Trading advice (MCX) for the day

Look for a buying opportunity when the market price breaks the first resistance level of 5185, first target 5215, and second target 5240.

On the selling side (which may be more probable today), look for the prices to breach the first support level of 5160, first target 5130, then 5095.

Overcoming Depression with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT ...

Visit www.Tapping.com for more Emotional Freedom Technique videos, EFT articles, and my E-Book. Emotional Freedom Technique is a simple acupressure technique for releasing negative feelings. You feel negative feelings in the body, so you have to go to the body to work on them. You can release a negative feeling right now with this video. Tapping is very effective on helping with Depression, but bear in mind you may need to do a lot of tapping to become completely happy. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q How hard should I tap? A: Tap lightly, just so that you feel it. The purpose of the tapping is to bring your attention to different parts of your body, it actually works if you just imagine tapping ? as long as your attention is drawn to the right points. Q: How can I be sure I am finding the right points? A: Use two fingers to make sure you cover the points. Sometimes the point will ?feel? right, as if there is a slight indent in the skin or the point is particularly sensitive. It?s all connected so you don?t have to be 100% accurate. Q: You have missed out points that Gary Craig teaches! A: Yes. Feel free to tap those too, I left them out to keep the video simple and it seems to work fine without them. If you find the video doesn?t work for you, try tapping the additional points ? around the top-middle of the head, and just under the armpit. Q: Is the sequence important? A: No. You can tap the points in any order. In fact you only need to tap one or two of the points for each ?

A Simple Guide to Outsourcing Property Management Services - Zillow

    Property Management Outsourcing Services

Managing properties is like juggling. Having to oversee all of the responsibilities that keep a building in fine order means that property managers consider many issues all at the same time. And in the end, some of these issues demand an expert?s knowledge ? knowledge that the average property manager doesn?t possess.

Property managers must collaborate with other professionals to fulfill maintenance obligations that come up. An effective property manager should have a whole roster of skilled contractors and consultants to support his or her business. When time is money, it?s best to focus on business operations like marketing and tenant retention, instead of just on maintenance. So outsourcing is the best way to save time while keeping your properties and business in good shape.

To get started streamlining your business by outsourcing, download a copy of our free guide, Outsourcing to Save Time and Money.
