WASHINGTON ? The Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee says President Barack Obama's policies often reflect a view that treats U.S. power as an adversary, rather than an ally, to peace.
In a speech to the American Enterprise Institute, Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon complains about proposed cuts in defense spending. Obama and congressional Republicans agreed this summer on a bill to cut spending and raise the debt limit. The bill called for $350 billion in cuts in projected defense spending over 10 years. McKeon backed the legislation.
The California lawmaker now warns against further reductions in military spending. He says that as the nation emerges from two wars, "we are lowering our gloves."
He says Obama's policies, quote, "resigns us to national decline."
