Modesto MMA fighter McDonald goes for world title Saturday in London
MODESTO -- Professional mixed martial arts fighter Michael ?Mayday? McDonald hasn?t stepped into the octagon in nearly 10 months, not since dropping Miguel Torres in the first round at UFC 145 in Atlanta last April.
That changes Saturday when the Modesto native meets interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao at London?s Wembley Arena in the main event of a 12-bout card that will be broadcast on Fuel TV (available on DirecTV, Dish Network and AT&T U-verse) at noon.
Though McDonald (15-1) has been out of the Ultimate Fighting Championship spotlight for nearly a year, he remains one of the sport?s hottest, up-and-coming stars.

That?s apparent by the buzz this fight has created and the manner in which McDonald ? barely out of his teens and fighting for a world title after just 16 pro fights and a lengthy layoff ? has utterly charmed the press since his arrival in England on Feb. 10.
The 2009 graduate of Davis High School is quick to smile and and share stories, talking freely to reporters about his fight strategy. Or lack thereof.
?I don?t know what I?m going to do. I have no strategy for any fight,? McDonald told Ben Blackmore of ESPN.co.uk after Wednesday?s pre-fight press conference. ?It?s almost scary ? and sometimes right before I?m about to walk out, I?m like, ?What I?m even going to do. I don?t even have a strategy.? ?
Blackmore later tweeted that McDonald ?? is arguably the most fascinating fighter I?ve ever spoken to in MMA. He sees MMA through a higher power!?
So taken with McDonald?s laid back, California cool, Blackmore decided to buck the odds and pick the 3-to-1 underdog.
?We?ve recorded a podcast where I?ve predicted Renan Barao is going to win the fight,? Blackmore told Gareth A. Davies of London?s Daily Telegraph on ESPN?s UFC podcast. ?Having spoken to Michael McDonald, I think I?m changing my opinion.?
Davies, who predicts a McDonald victory, called him ?intriguing and brilliant.? He was described in London?s Daily Mirror as the ?cerebral American.? The New York Post referred to him as ?athletic and explosive,? but ?also extremely cerebral.?
?He has no tactics whatsoever,? Blackmore said in the podcast. ?He just improvises, and he is something really, really special in the sport.?
Should McDonald prove Blackmore prescient, he would become the youngest champion ? 22 years, 32 days ? in the 20-year history of the UFC. To put that in perspective, Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) was 22 years and 39 days old when he ascended to the world heavyweight boxing throne in February 1964.
But for now, McDonald is focused solely on Barao, not history.
Asked if he?d allowed himself to steal a glance at Barao?s belt ? on display at the center of the dais during Wednesday?s pre-fight press conference ? McDonald gave a startlingly honest reply.
?I don?t care it?s there,? said McDonald, who trains out of the Oakdale MMA club and is getting his first title shot. ?That?s not what it?s about for me. This is just like any other fight.?
Well, maybe not like ?any? other fight.
Barao is 29-1 (with one no contest) and hasn?t lost since his professional debut in 2005. He?s coming off an impressive win over Urijah Faber last July for the title at UFC 149 in Calgary. And, at 25, he?s already headlined a UFC card and has previously fought in England, which gives him experience in dealing with adjustments brought on by travel and time change.

Not Just a 'Feminine Mystique': What Hasn't Changed Enough for ...
On The Times?s Room for Debate online forum, Gail Collins led a discussion among five women about the 50th anniversary of ?The Feminine Mystique.? Betty Friedan, she said, wrote a cry of rage and frustration about feeling trapped in her role. She asked her debaters, ?What?s your cry of rage today?? and they answered, with passion you can see and hear (watch their discussion, a Google Plus video debate, here).
Around here, on Motherlode, parents of both sexes are outraged by the ways our culture, society and policies box men and women into particular roles, or change the expectations regarding what one parent or another will do based on his or her sex. To judge from your comments over time, very few of us think schools should hold parent-teacher conferences only during the workday, or that fathers should be silenced during doctor appointments, or that employers should assume that a mother will make different work choices than a father based on her family?s needs.
Much has changed since ?The Feminine Mystique? was published in 1963. More so for women, by far, but the revolution the book embodies is freeing men as well. Which is why, as I watched the debate led by Gail Collins, I found myself with what some would call a surprising wish for a feminist: I wanted to hear men?s voices, too. The role of women in society and family isn?t going to change unless the role of men shifts as well.
Stephanie Coontz, author of ?A Strange Stirring,? says at the beginning of the discussion, ?It?s so easy to blame your partner, or your employer, for not doing enough. We need to channel our rage at the political bureaucrats and business leaders who have refused to adjust their work policies and their parental leave policies to the fact that we no longer have a world where every employee has a wife at home to take care of the rest of life.? It cannot only be women pointing out that not every family has a wife at home to take on the children daily at 3 p.m. sharp; men have to object to that assumption too.
Milly Silva, health care labor advocate, asks: ?What happens with women today who don?t have a choice about whether to go to work? ? When we think about the situation with health care workers across the country, you oftentimes have women who walk out of their house every morning and they go to someone else?s home, to provide home care, or go to provide care for a senior who has no other family to take care of him or her, and those very same women have to then think about, well, what?s happening with my own children? How am I going to work two to three jobs in order to make ends meet??
Again, women cannot be alone in decrying the millions of jobs that don?t offer a living wage; one that allows every parent to financially support a family without having to work so many jobs that he or she can?t also spend time raising them.
It?s not a single discussion, of course. It?s a thousand conversations on dozens of topics. In an epilogue to ?The Feminine Mystique? written a decade after the book was published, Betty Friedan wrote, ?It isn?t really possible to make a new pattern of life all by yourself.?? Friedan never believed she spoke only for women, or only for women who wanted to work outside the home.
She called for ?a sex-role revolution for men and women which will restructure all our institutions: child-rearing, education, marriage, the family, the architecture of the home, the practice of medicine, work, politics, the economy, religion, psychological theory, human sexuality, morality and the very evolution of the race? and added, to all that, that ?the economic part would never be complete unless a dollar value was somehow put on the work done my women in the home, at least in terms of social security, pensions, retirement pay. And housework and child-rearing will have to be more equally shared by husband, wife and society.?
As much as has changed since ?The Feminine Mystique? was published, we still don?t get to check off anything on than long, long list of ?restructuring.? We have put the basics in place for our generation; now, we?re working to fulfill their promise for our children. During the Room for Debate discussion, Shelby Knox, a young activist, said, ?the biggest challenge to my generation of women is this idea that we are equal. That everything has been won. We think that every time we meet a barrier, it?s our fault. It must be something we?ve done because the promise is there.?
Gail Collins asked, what still enrages you as a woman now? I?m asking, what enrages you as a parent?
I?m enraged every time a parent, man or woman, pretends that he or she doesn?t have a nanny, or a babysitter, or a grandparent, or spouse, helping to prevent the needs of a family from becoming a barrier to work or career. I?m enraged every time we talk about ?women who choose to work outside the home? as though every woman had a ?choice,? and no man ever wanted to ?choose.? I?m furious every time someone calls those things ?women?s issues? when what they are are family issues ? and family issues affect everyone.

Mixed corporate earnings turn markets cautious
LONDON (AP) ? Global stocks were steady on Wednesday as corporate earnings reports sent mixed signals about the economy and trading in currency markets remained volatile.
Although U.S. earnings have been relatively upbeat this week, European reports were distinctly mixed, showing some companies are still in the midst of a deep restructuring of their business. Dutch insurer ING is slashing another 2,400 jobs while French bank Societe Generale booked a loss in the fourth quarter and said it will make savings cuts.
French car maker PSA Peugeot Citroen posted a record loss in 2012 but its shares rose 6 percent as it said it was now ready to benefit from a recovery in demand next year after painful job cuts.
By midday in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was flat at 6,333.76 while Germany's DAX was up 0.4 percent to 7,689.87. France's CAC-40 was also unchanged at 3,685.1.
Wall Street appeared headed for a higher open, with futures in both the Dow and the broader S&P 500 rising 0.1 percent. On Tuesday, the Dow closed at its highest level since late 2007, just 150 points off its record of 14,164.53.
Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei index tumbled as the yen strengthened against the dollar following a pledge by finance ministers from the world's seven major advanced economies to refrain from intentionally weakening their currencies. The Nikkei 225 dropped 1 percent to close at 11,251.41.
The Group of Seven nations said in a statement that they remained committed to exchange rates driven by the market, meaning governments or central banks should not try to influence their value.
Traders interpreted the statement as a message directed at Japan, where the yen has plummeted against the dollar since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took office and pushed the central bank for ultra-loose monetary policy. Central bank governor Masaaki Shirakawa, who has appeared at odds with Abe's views on monetary policy, is resigning next month, giving the government an opportunity to find a successor more sympathetic to its aims.
After falling sharply against the yen on Tuesday, the dollar stabilized on Wednesday, trading 0.1 percent higher at 93.62 yen. The euro, which like the yen rose against the dollar after the G-7 statement, gained another 0.3 percent to $1.3492.
Glenn Levine, senior economist at Moody's Analytics, said Japan's steps to boost its economy, including asset purchases by the Bank of Japan and raising the inflation target to 2 percent, offer promise but come with the risk of sparking a currency war.
He noted that the U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of England have taken even more aggressive steps but have been "less vocal, and have thus avoided setting off currency alarms."
"Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe merely vocalized what everyone already knew, that a cheaper currency is beneficial to growth," Levine said.
The Bank of Japan begins a two-day policy meeting Wednesday but analysts said no new initiatives were expected in light of the impending leadership change.
Elsewhere, Australian stocks closed at their highest level since September 2008. The S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.9 percent to 5,003.70 after the release of strong earnings from Commonwealth Bank of Australia and construction company Leighton Holdings.
South Korea's Kospi advanced 1.6 percent to 1,976.07. Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines also rose.
Markets in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietnam were closed for Lunar New Year holidays.
In commodity markets, the benchmark crude oil contract for March delivery was up 24 cents to $97.75 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 48 cents to finish at $97.51 on the Nymex on Tuesday.
