Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that occurs in the tissue covering the stomach and bowels (peritoneal tissue) or in the tissue covering the outside surface of the lung (pleural tissue). 90% of the cases of Malignant Mesothelioma are caused by exposure to Asbestos.

This year?s drought has spelled nothing but disaster for many farmers in the Midwestern United States. But those who own vineyards are looking on the bright side: this kind of weather has the potential to bring on better tasting wine.
That much is good, because the drought certainly isn?t increasing the volume in vineyards. According to an Associated Press report, many vineyard crops have been severely damaged and burned by the excessive dry heat of the region. Still, those in the Midwestern wine industry ? an industry that?s growing and hoping for increased global credibility in its field ? have high hopes for the crops that are left:

"The fruit will be better, overall, for reds and whites, then last year, when it was wet," said Tony Debevc, who has a 170-acre Ohio vineyard. "If it continues to be dry like this, the wine industry will be better overall. And personally, we can expand in the red category, and it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing."

Optimism is always good, and in this case it may also be necessary. Some winemakers cited in the article are conjecturing that this new heat may be less a sign of temporary drought and more a sign of climate changes to come ? a boon for those cultivating red wine varietals:

?Certainly, here in Ohio, and northern Ohio, and the Midwest, I think our heat days are increasing, our sun days are increasing," [Breitenbach Winery owner Duke] Bixler said. "I think it is a permanent thing."

Diego Meraviglia, vice president and education director for the North American Sommelier Association, chimed in on the matter with the opinion that the wine resulting from the drought could be quite flavorful indeed ? though he also expressed concerns about both longevity and complexity:

This year's wines from America's heartland "will be nice, fruity and very approachable and soft on the pallet," predicted [Meraviglia].
But he believes the drought has cost some grape varieties complexities that may hinder the wines' abilities to age, meaning "you have to drink them within a year or they'll go bad."
"It'll be enjoyable right off the bat," he said. "But real connoisseurs who drink aged wine will be disappointed."

It?s certainly fair to add those reservations, as they?ll certainly make a difference to wine enthusiasts and professionals alike. But hopefully the wine will live up to the highest expectations. For one thing, in a drought like the one the Midwest is currently experiencing, any good news or benefits are more than welcome ? and if this climate shift turns out to be more than temporary, the ability to thrive despite changing conditions will perhaps at least serve these vineyards well.

The Pakistani rupee sank to an all-time low against the dollar Friday on high oil prices and forex reserve fears as the country repaid nearly $400 million to the International Monetary Fund.
The rupee fell to 94.75 to the greenback in trading in Karachi on Friday, down from 94.70 on Thursday, and has now lost 33 percent of its value against the US currency since March 2008.
"The increase in the international oil price... has affected Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves and they could suffer further with the repayment of IMF's installment due today," said analyst Mohammad Sohail of Topline Securities.
"These factors have contributed to the panic in the currency market."
In Asian oil markets on Friday, Brent North Sea crude for October delivery stood at $114.54 a barrel, while New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in October was at $95.68.
Syed Wasimuddin, spokesman for Pakistan's central bank, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), told AFP the country had repaid $397.2 million to the IMF on Friday afternoon.
He said so far Pakistan has repaid $1.3 billion to the IMF. Pakistan had already paid 901.4 million in three instalments previously.
An official in the Ministry of Finance corroborated the repayment and hoped it would have a "minimal effect" on the forex reserves, which stood at $15.18 billion before the IMF payment.
The Washington-based fund bailed out Pakistan with an $11.3 billion loan package launched in November 2008 as the country faced 30-year-high inflation rates and fast-depleting reserves, as well as a deadly insurgency.
Sohail said the panic in the currency market may continue next week, if the international oil and commodity prices do not stabilise to a comfortable level.

A deadline for dropping out of Missouri?s U.S. Senate race passed Tuesday with Republican Todd?Akin?still in the hunt, despite more withering attacks from his own party.

?Let me just make it clear: We?re not getting out of this race,??Akin?said on a conservative St. Louis radio show. ?I?m in this for the long haul, and we?re going to win it.?
The unprecedented onslaught spurred by his weekend comments about rape victims came from the highest reaches of the Republican Party and raised new doubts about whether?Akin?s?campaign could recover.
Even GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney called for?Akin?to withdraw. So did U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, Missouri?s highest elected Republican, and four former senators from Missouri: John Ashcroft, Jack Danforth, Kit Bond and Jim Talent.
Major GOP fundraisers, including Crossroads GPS, pledged again to abandon?Akin?s?campaign. So did the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. And top party officials asked?Akin?not to attend next week?s Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.
But through it all,?Akin?held firm, blaming his fall from party grace on ?one word in one sentence on one day.? That, he said, was a reference to his use of the word ?legitimate? in response to a TV interviewer?s question Sunday about whether he supports abortion even in cases of rape.
?If it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,??Akin?said that day in comments that triggered a national firestorm. He later said he misspoke and apologized.
But?Akin?didn?t comment Tuesday on the ?female body has ways to shut that whole thing down? part of his statement, which was widely debunked by women?s groups in Missouri and nationwide.
Romney attempted to distance himself for the second straight day from the remarks that the Republican Party fears could further weaken its standing with women.
?Todd?Akin?s?comments were offensive and wrong, and he should very seriously consider what course would be in the best interest of our country,? Romney said. ?Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race.?
The group of Missouri?s Republican senators ? current and former ? were just as direct, saying?Akin?s comments about rape victims were ?totally unacceptable? and that?Akin?must step down.
?We do not believe it serves the national interest for Congressman Todd?Akin?to stay in this race,? they said in a statement. ?The issues at stake are too big, and this election is simply too important. The right decision is to step aside.?
But failed to keep up the appearance of being the prefect mom, wife and family yesterday. We had a meeting with SS7's Therapist yesterday and the step-parents were 'encouraged' to attend by the Therapist. So I went and I planned to just sit there and answer any questions that were asked of me.
We went in and BM sat in the corner while FDH and I sat on the sofa together. Chubby Hubby (BM's husband) was running late. The Therapist started talking about her sessions with SS7 and made note of our 'journal', she stressed the need for structure in SS7 life and 'syncing' the households - all the while looking at BM. She already told us that we were very structured. The importance of getting enough sleep and nutrition. BM chimed in and said that he eats really well (yeah if it's pizza) while I talked about taking him to McD's and trying to talk him into a 6 piece instead of a 4 piece. We talked about dinner time, FDH told her we eat as a family at the dinner table every night, I added that the boys and I still eat at the table even if FDH has to work late. BM said "Oh yeah we do that too". (Ss7 says he eats in his room or in the living room)
She talked about limiting his TV and Video game time - not so much setting time limits but just watching it and knowing when it can be turned off. I told her that I don't turn the TVs on at all in the morning when the kids have school because other wise they don't get ready. (BM said nothing)
She talked about NOT coddling him all the time, he needs to learn to deal with things on his own. I told her about him getting a paper cut in the car and since I was driving I couldn't help him so she started talking to himself and telling himself that it was okay. FDH talked about getting SS7 to wash his own hair and put on his own lotion. (BM said nothing)
She talked about 'transition' period, when the boys got from house to house and how to make it better. She added that it will always be weird for the first 24 hours but allowing the kids to relax (no video games or TV) before and right after we make the switch.
We talked about him going to that bathroom all the time - his new 'stress release'. Therapist said we need to nip that in the butt, it not healthy. We have to explain to him that it's just his mind playing tricks on him. We talked about some of the other things that he might do to relieve stress and BM just said that he doesn't do that at her house - to which the Therapist responded. "If he does it at one house then he does it at both, you probably just don't notice it".
We talked about School and Therapist asked who his teacher was, BM answered and FDH was like really that's good to know. BM said they sent him something but I get the mail and trust me they didn't send anything. Of course this was after Therapist said that we seem to get along better than most - apparently we just suck at communicating.
At some point in there Chubby Hubby joined us. He looked SO happy to be there. He went in and sat in the seat furthest from BM (which was the Therapist made him move - that was her seat). The Therapist asked him what his concerns were and he told her to come back to him, which she did twice and he still had nothing.
She warned us that we needed to watch what we say around SS7 - she tested him and even though he looks to not be paying attention he takes a lot in. FDH agreed that this was could apply to us, we tend to say things about BM when we think SS7 isn't hearing us. He also picks up on what it going on around him more than most kids. FDH told the story SS7 told him about BM not having any money (burn) and how he came to that conclusion on his own.
I am not sure what we were talking about at the time but FDH also felt the need to tell BM and the Therapist that the night before SS7 told him that he just wanted to stay home all week, when said that he could and I would stay with him SS7 went off on this rant about how he just wanted BM to stay home with him one day but won't, she is always gone. FDH explained the BM has to work and he was actually nice about it which made the Therapist smile and comment that FDH and BM seem to be better at that than most divorced parents. I am sure (or I hope) it made BM feel like crap since she can't even stay home with him on weekends.
During the meeting I was loving to FDH, I put my hand on his back or held his hand while BM and Chubby didn't even want to sit by each other. Half way through the Therapist started calling Chubby by the wrong name and no one corrected her (not my job). As we walked out i walked by FDH and stood by him in the elevator. BM and Chubby stood on opposite walls. When we got outside FDH said he was hungry and I offered to fix him something when we got home. BM told Chubby that she was going back to work (this is at like 5:30) When he asked how long she was going to be she said a few HOURS! As we pulled away they were standing on both sides of her van talking across the hood - with what looked like a rather heated discussion by the body language - there was no contact not even a kiss good-bye (they had a van between them) and rode there in separate cars. We went out to eat with a friend later and I tried to talk FDH into driving past her work to see if BM was actually working but he wouldn't do it. I was just nosy. We have been thinking that they are having issues for sometime and I was shocked that he even came.
So A long story short BM basically lied about how perfect her house was for SS7 (and we think the Therapist knew that she was lying since she directed most of the comments about making changes to her) and FDH and I did most of the talking. I told him that I can't speak for the Therapist but she has to be wondering about it. I mean I know what I saw and it wasn't the picture perfect blended family that BM likes to portray. It was very one sided.

Team at BC's spinal cord injury research center is using the latest spinal cord research to create a more comprehensive classification system for the Paralympics
Vancouver, BC August 23, 2012 Vancouver-based clinician and researcher Dr. Andrei Krassioukov is packing for the upcoming Paralympic games in London. Rather than packing sports equipment, he has a suitcase full of advanced scientific equipment funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation that he will use to monitor the cardiovascular function of athletes with spinal cord injuries.
Up to 90% of people with injuries between that cervical and high thoracic vertebrae suffer from a condition that limits their ability to regulate heart rate and blood pressure. For top-level athletes, this can be a huge competitive disadvantage. Facing the pressure of top-level international competition, Paralympic athletes have found creative ways to boost their blood pressure through purposely inflicting pain or discomfort, causing huge spikes in blood pressure.
"As a clinician, I can understand why Paralympic athletes are boosting their blood pressure" said Dr. Krassioukov. "They are not being fairly classified based on the true nature of their disability. We are working to change that."
This process is not only dangerous, increasing the risk of stroke, but it's also banned by the Paralympic committee.
Dr. Krassioukov has been asked by the International Paralympic movement to find a process for assessing and classifying athletes based on cardiovascular function making the need for this type of boosting irrelevant.
Think of classification at the Paralympic games, much like the weight classes in a weightlifting or boxing match. It establishes a fair competition by ensuring that athletes are competing against their peers in ability and level of function.
He started his work with Paralympic athletes competing at the Beijing games, continued it in Vancouver and is now headed to London to assess, monitor and educate athletes. Dr. Krassioukov and a group of his students will be presenting the results of their work relating to the Beijing and Vancouver Games at the International Spinal Cord Society annual meetings in London, September 3-5th.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Over the last 50 years, the spotting of newborn's blood onto filter paper for disease screening, called Guthrie cards, has become so routine that since 2000, more than 90% of newborns in the United States have had Guthrie cards created. In a study published online in Genome Research, researchers have shown that epigenetic information stored on archived Guthrie cards provides a retrospective view of the epigenome at birth, a powerful new application for the card that could help understand disease and predict future health.
DNA methylation, an epigenetic chemical modification of DNA, is known to affect gene activity and play a role in normal development, aging, and also in diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. "But are these epigenetic marks involved in causing the disease, or a result of the disease itself?" asked Dr. Vardhman Rakyan of Queen Mary, University of London and co-senior author of the study. Rakyan explained that this is impossible to know when samples are obtained after onset of the disease. Guthrie cards, commonly used to collect blood spots from the pricked heel of newborns to screen for diseases such as phenylketonuria, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cells disorders, might offer a snapshot of the epigenome before disease develops. Many Guthrie cards are stored indefinitely by health authorities around the world, posing a potential wealth of information about the epigenome at birth.
Rakyan and an international group of colleagues purified genomic DNA and analyzed DNA methylomes from Guthrie cards and verified that this archived DNA yields high-quality methylation data when compared to fresh samples. The researchers then compared the DNA methylation profiles of newborns to the same healthy individuals at the age of three, looking for epigenetic variations detected in the Guthrie card sample that are stable into the early years of life.
"We found similar epigenetic differences between different people both at birth and when they were three years old," said Rakyan, who added that these differences, already present at birth, are unlikely due solely to inherent genetic differences between the individuals, but also due to environment or random events in utero. Furthermore, Guthrie card samples could be analyzed for both genetic and epigenetic differences together to view a more complete picture of the genome at birth.
Guthrie card methylomics is a potentially powerful new application for archived blood spots, which could provide a wealth of information about epigenetics and disease, and could give clues about health later in life. Dr. David Leslie, co-senior author of the study, added that because national health authorities routinely make Guthrie cards available, and with the proper consent obtained from parents and children, "we are talking about an invaluable, and non-renewable, resource for millions of individuals."
