A Delightful Post from CONTRARY BRIN - Pilant's Business Ethics ...

Why the Candidates Should (But Won?t) Stipulate

Take the day in 1992 when both Republican Senator Warren Rudman and Democrat Paul Tsongas made headlines declaring that everybody was at fault for the country?s fiscal condition at the time, from then-President Bush to the democrat-controlled Congress, to the American people. Responsible economists later credited Rudman and Tsongas for spurring reforms that helped lead to the Clinton era surpluses.

Around the same time, retired senator and conservative eminence gris Barry Goldwater denounced the followers of ?migr? philosopher Leo Strauss ? so-called ?neocons? ? for hijacking Goldwater?s beloved movement over cliffs of romantic delusion. A more recent example of post retirement candor came When G.W. Bush?s ex-Treasury Secretary, Paul O?Neill, revealed a swamp of backroom dealings and ineptitude, explaining that he was ?old and rich? and unafraid to speak his mind. On the other side, some claim that Senator Joe Lieberman really came into his own when he ran as an independent, shrugging off party discipline (if such a thing exists, among democrats.)

CONTRARY BRIN

The article goes on to point out that candor is almost suicidal under the rules of our current system. Excellent thought. What I found more interesting was Brin?s awareness of Leo Strauss, the man behind the curtain of much of the modern Neoconservative movement. I wouldn?t have expected a scientist to have read so deeply into politics.

Yes, Strauss is mentioned in the histories you can find on the web about Neoconservatism but few point out his critical role in the movement, nor do they emphasize the manipulative nature of his teaching. The articles talk about Strauss teaching about a return to Classical values ? this is utter nonsense, Strauss was designing a new political elite from his students, manipulative and power hungry. We will be dealing with his minions for decades to come. He planted the dragon seeds that bedevil our foreign policy even today. And they will be pulling many other strings as well.

So, Mr. Brin has impressed me and I wish him well. I think we share many of the same thoughts.

Students parade their pets at SWG

By BRANDON L. SUMMERS, bsummers@messengernews.net , Messenger News

Southeast Webster Grand Elementary held its annual pet parade Friday.

The school's first-grade students have completed a section on animals in their science unit, and celebrated by bringing their pets from home.

"What kind of pets did we learn about?" science teacher Jennifer Axness asked her class.

Student Mikayla Stevens, left, pets the lizard, Lizzie, brought by her classmate Jace Hanson and held by his father, Matt Hanson, at Southeast Webster Grand?s annual Pet Parade Friday.

The students answered, in unison, "Mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds."

Asked what are some of the things they've learned, the students, in turn, answered that birds have two stomachs, mammals drink milk from their mothers, fish have cold blood and need gills to breathe.

They also learned that mammals have four-chambered hearts and are born alive.

The first-grade students were also able to identify an animal's type by its characteristics.

"What do we know about giraffes? What kind of animal would they be?" Axness asked.

The students answered that it is a mammal, because it is warm-blooded and has fur.

Parents brought the students' pets from home to show to their classmates. Friday the classroom was filled with dogs as big as a Labrador and as small as a Chihuahua, a turtle, a lizard, a rabbit and a grown cat and a kitten. Students without a pet were allowed to bring a stuffed animal.

Student Brylie Butrick showed her crested Swedish duck, which honked loudly, to the other students' delight.

Axness asked the students what they have to do to care for their animals. They answered that the animals have to be bathed, given fresh water and food and be loved.

"They need love and care just like we do, don't they?" she said.

After showing their pets to the class, the students lined up along the elementary school's basketball court to display the animals to their fellow schoolmates. Outside, students got to pet each animal and learn about them.

Student Riley Sorenson, with her grandfather, Troy Sorenson, showed her pet goat, Daisy.

While students admired the animals, judges circulated to give awards. Awards included most unusual, hairiest, cutest, cleanest and happiest.

Axness said she enjoys holding the pet parade.

"This is my second time, and it's been something I enjoy a lot," she said.

Asked if they enjoyed learning about animals, Axness's students answered, loudly and in unison, "Yeah!"

Why You Should Not Ignore Social Media Marketing For Your ...

It seems practically everyone today has a social media presence. Why not take advantage of that fact and use social media as a marketing platform? There are thousands of people creating Twitter and Facebook pages each day. Businesses are doing it! So should you! Read the following tips and you can market your business through the social media websites.

Every post you make on your blog should include a link at the top to share it on Facebook. This will let people who visit your blog share what they see with their friends. This can have a multiplying effect and expand the number of viewers. This, in turn, will generate even more visitors to buy your products.

Be certain to add postings and updates often. Give contacts and readers something to anticipate and depend on. Determine your own posting schedule, or consider using a service able to post on your behalf at regular intervals. This is a great way to keep readers interested.

TIP! Consider a giveaway for your profile on the social media sites. Something for nothing is always tempting to your potential customers and the offer may attract them to start following your business site.

Build a party for your Twitter followers. Identify a specific time and date during which all of your followers use hashtags to discuss a trending topic. Ask a few knowledgeable bloggers to chat with your customers. Be sure to choose bloggers who are reputable, and will write about your party as well as bring in people from their crowd.

If you want more people to view your posts on Twitter, use hash tags that are relevant to your example. Figure out which keyword applies best, like #cooking for a recipe or #Toronto for an event you?re hosting in the city. This will get your posts to show up in lists and searches and will let people who aren?t following you see what you have to say.

If your company has a blog that you update with content, make sure you highlight new content after publication on social media sites. Your subscribers will know that there is content up that they have not yet seen.

TIP! Share updates of influential users of Twitter or try mentioning them in posts by having their usernames placed after the ?@? symbol. These people will retweet your post or even write a reply tweet just for you.

Anytime you post on Twitter, make sure a tag is added on. Tags will show after the # symbol. They will allow your updates to show up in feeds for particular subscribers. Choose your tags wisely and look for groups that your target audience would be likely to subscribe to.

Maintain records of progress along the way. Create measurable statistics that track your new activity and followers. Figure out which actions gained you the most action, and then repeat those strategies. If you aren?t monitoring all your social medial marketing results then it becomes impossible to know what works and what doesn?t.

Add catchy titles to your videos when you market on YouTube. They are important if you want to market your business using YouTube. Make sure they are interesting and entice users so much they cannot help but press ?play.? For best results, you should include one or two keywords in the title.

TIP! Make sure you give your content a good headline. Make sure you ask questions that they will want to know the answers for.

This article has provided some dialogue about various ways in which you can reap the benefits of social media for the benefit of your business. Implement all of the strategies you learned and make sure you always expose yourself to new information as well, when you do this you?ll see success before you know it. Your hard work will pay off when millions of users can see your product and your income

SCE President says new consoles won't come out every few years ...

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House recently spoke to Nikkei and had some big words for console cycles. He says that the days of using a business model of releasing a new console every 4-6 years are gone. We?re still translating the interview so forgive us for any errors. We?ll correct them as they become apparent.

Here?s a rough translation of what House said in his interview with Nikkei:

?Game consoles connecting to online networks is now the norm. The value of a console increases by connecting to an online network. Former business models that rely on switching to new generations of hardware on a several year basis have ended because of this. We expect our online sales for this year to be 1.5 times greater than last. Particularly, the number of users that have been paying via methods other than a credit card have been increasing. Even the common user now realizes the attraction of downloading games to play.?

Sony recently stated that they plan to support the PS3 for at least a few more years, perhaps through 2015. They?v stated multiple times that they want the PS3 to have a ten year lifespan, much like the PS2. While I don?t doubt that the PS3 will still be a formidable console in 2015 I imagine the PS4 will be released by then.

It?s sort of ironic that the President of SCE is saying that making a new console every 4-6 years just because you can isn?t a good thing when all speculation points to the PS4 being revealed and releasing next year. That would be 7 years after the PS3, so I guess by House?s math the PS4 would not have an issue releasing next year.

Does this mean the PS4 is less likely to come out in 2013? No, but Sony sure it taking a long time to reveal their new console. For example they teased the PS3 in 2004 and revealed it in 2005. The PS2 was revealed in 1999 about one year before release too. So if they follow that trend and reveal the PS4 at E3 2013 then a 2014 release date wouldn?t be out of the question.

Amplats says taking action against South Africa strikers

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The world's top platinum producer, Anglo American Platinum, has started disciplinary action including possible dismissal against workers taking part in an illegal strike in South Africa, the company said on Thursday.

The company, a unit of global mining giant Anglo American, also said that attendance at its four mines near Rustenburg, 120 km (70 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, remained below 20 percent despite repeated threats to get tough.

A wave of wildcat strikes is roiling South Africa's mining sector despite the end of an illegal six-week stoppage at platinum producer Lonmin in which 46 people were killed.

Amplats' chief executive Chris Griffith said on Wednesday the company would start making good on threats to sack workers if they did not report for duty within 24 hours.

"Despite repeatedly urging our employees to come back to work, attendance at our Rustenburg operations remains low," he said. "We have been left with no choice but to initiate disciplinary action, which could lead to dismissals."

Rustenburg labor activist and community representative Mametlwe Sebei struck a defiant tone, saying striking Amplats workers were not intimidated by the ultimatum.

"No amount of threats are going to move our workers from their demands," he told Reuters.

The demands include an increase in a minimum monthly wage to 12,500 rand ($1,500), more than double that currently earned by those at the bottom of the pay scale.

When rival Impala Platinum fired 17,000 illegal strikers in the same area in January, it unleashed a wave of violence that closed its Rustenburg operation, the world's largest platinum mine, for 6 weeks. Three people were killed.

ANC outcast Julius Malema, a populist who has backed the wildcat strikes and called for the nationalization of South Africa's mines, is due to address Implats' workers later on Thursday to encourage them to press for higher wages.

Close to 75,000 workers are on strike or being prevented from going to work in South Africa's mining sector, including at mines run by the world's third- and fourth-biggest bullion producers, AngloGold Ashanti and Gold Fields.

Ready for your close-up?

Thursday, September 27, 2012

As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." For people in certain professions ? acting, modeling, and even politics ? this phrase rings particularly true. Previous studies have examined how our social judgments of pictures of people are influenced by factors such as whether the person is smiling or frowning, but until now one factor has never been investigated: the distance between the photographer and the subject. According to a new study by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), this turns out to make a difference ? close-up photo subjects, the study found, are judged to look less trustworthy, less competent, and less attractive.

The new finding is described in this week's issue of the open-access journal PLoS One.

Pietro Perona, the Allen E. Puckett Professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech, came up with the initial idea for the study. Perona, an art history enthusiast, suspected that Renaissance portrait paintings often featured subtle geometric warping of faces to make the viewer feel closer or more distant to a subject. Perona wondered if the same sort of warping might affect photographic portraits ? with a similar effect on their viewers ? so he collaborated with Ralph Adolphs, Bren Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and professor of biology, and CNS graduate student Ronnie Bryan (PhD '12) to gather opinions on 36 photographs representing two different images of 18 individuals. One of each pair of images was taken at close range and the second at a distance of about seven feet.

"It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance," explains Bryan. "Of course, the close picture would also normally be larger, higher resolution and have different lighting ? but we controlled for all of that in our study. What you're left with is a warping effect that is so subtle that nobody in our study actually noticed it. Nonetheless, it's a perceptual clue that influenced their judgments."

That subtle distance warping, however, had a big effect: close-up photos made people look less trustworthy, according to study participants. The close-up photo subjects were also judged to look less attractive and competent.

"This was a surprising, and surprisingly reliable, effect," says Adolphs. "We went through a bunch of experiments, some testing people in the lab, and some even over the Internet; we asked participants to rate trustworthiness of faces, and in some experiments we asked them to invest real money in unfamiliar people whose faces they saw as a direct measure of how much they trusted them."

Across all of the studies, the researchers saw the same effect, Adolphs says: in photos taken from a distance of around two feet, a person looked untrustworthy, compared to photos taken seven feet away. These two distances were chosen by the researchers because one is within, and the other outside of, personal space ? which on average is about three to four feet from the body.

In some of the studies, the researchers digitally warped images of faces taken at a distance to artificially manipulate how trustworthy they would appear. "Once you know the relation between the distance warp and the trustworthiness judgment, you could manipulate photos of faces and change the perceived trustworthiness,'' notes Perona.

He says that the group is now planning to build on these findings, using machine-vision techniques ? technologies that can automatically analyze data in images. For example, one application would be for a computer program to have the ability to evaluate any face image in a magazine or on the Internet and to estimate the distance at which the photo was taken.

"The work might also allow us to estimate the perceived trustworthiness of a particular face image," says Perona. "You could imagine that many people would be interested in such applications ? particularly in the political arena."

(AP) ? Egypt's new President Mohammed Morsi assigned himself the heavyweight's role in the Middle East on Wednesday, declaring in his first speech to the United Nations that the civil war raging in Syria is the "tragedy of the age" and must be brought to an end.

In a wide-ranging address that touched on all major issues confronting the region, Morsi also decried Israeli settlement-building on territory Palestinians claim for a future state and condemned a film produced in the United States that denigrates Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

He urged all U.N. member nations to join in an effort to end what he called "the catastrophe in Syria" that pits the regime of Bashar Assad against opposition forces trying to end 40 years of dictatorship. More than 30,000 people have been killed in the 18-month conflict.

Morsi has called for Assad to step down and said Wednesday that "the bloodshed in Syria and the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded must be stopped."

Morsi, an Islamist and key member of the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, opened his remarks to the U.N. General Assembly by celebrating himself as Egypt's first democratically elected leader who was swept into office after what he called a "great, peaceful revolution" that overthrew Hosni Mubarak.

He then quickly inserted himself into the thorniest issues in the Middle East, demanding that the United Nations grant membership to the Palestinians, with or without a peace agreement with Israel.

"The fruits of dignity and freedom must not remain far from the Palestinian people," he said, adding that it was "shameful" that U.N. resolutions are not enforced.

The Palestinians are expected to again ask for U.N. recognition and formally make application to the world body in November, after the U.S. presidential election. President Barack Obama said when the Palestinians sought recognition last year that Washington would block the move until there was a peace deal with Israel. The focus of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which have been on hold for four years, is a two-state solution that would formally grant the Palestinians the rights of an independent country.

In his bid to end the violence in Syria, Morsi has invited Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia to join a contact group, though the Saudis have not yet participated and the fighting in Syria continues unabated. While Morsi wants Assad to step aside, he said Wednesday that he opposes any foreign military intervention.

The U.N. Security Council, which could call for intervention or global sanctions against Syria, is deadlocked because Russia, Assad's main protector, and China have blocked a series of resolutions brought by Western governments.

Morsi also denounced as an obscenity the anti-Islam video that portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a womanizer, a child molester and a fraud, insisting that freedom of expression does not allow for attacks on any religion.

He also condemned the violence that swept Muslim countries last week in reaction to the video. At least 51 people were killed, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans targeted in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

"Egypt respects freedom of expression. One that is not used to incite hatred against anyone. One that is not directed toward one specific religion or culture. A freedom of expression that tackles extremism and violence. Not the freedom of expression that deepens ignorance and disregards others," Morsi said.

He appeared to have been responding to Obama's General Assembly speech Tuesday in which the U.S. leader again condemned the video but sternly defended the U.S. Constitution's free speech guarantees.

In Cairo, Egyptians watched Morsi's speech closely for signs of how he would conduct his presidency. Sahar Abdel-Mohsen, a 31-year architect, praised Morsi's condemnation of the Assad regime, but questioned his assertions about free speech.

"How can he talk about freedom of expression when there are many protesters in detention in Egypt, including minors, and when people are locked up for the so-called contempt of religion?" she said.

The head of the Arab League, meanwhile, called for the international community to criminalize blasphemy, warning that insults to religion pose a serious threat to global peace and security.

Nabil Elaraby's comments to a special session of the U.N. Security Council put him at direct odds with the United States and its Western allies, which are resolutely opposed to restrictions on freedom of expression. However, Elaraby said that if the West has criminalized acts that result in bodily harm, it must also criminalize acts that cause "psychological and spiritual harm."

Earlier Wednesday, Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, known for past fiery denunciations of the United States and Israel, spoke at length about his vision for a new world order without the "hegemony of arrogance."

Of Israel, he cited what he termed the "continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation."

The U.S. delegation boycotted Ahmadinejad's speech in response to the "paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel" included in a separate address delivered by the Iranian president on Monday.

"It's particularly unfortunate that Mr. Ahmadinejad will have the platform of the U.N. General Assembly on Yom Kippur, which is why the United States has decided not to attend," Erin Pelton, spokeswoman for the U.S. Mission to the U.N., said in a statement.

Thousands of protesters in yellow vests emblazoned with photos of Iranian dissidents they said were killed by the Iranian regime gathered outside U.N. headquarters during the Iranian leader's speech. Speakers included former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, and former Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I.

Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was threatened by members of the protest crowd as he walked near the United Nations. He was confronted by the angry mob, said New York police spokesman Paul Browne. The diplomat flagged down police officers, who helped him get to a safe spot. Browne said the threats were believed to have been verbal.

In his speech on Wednesday, Ahmadinejad did not refer to Iran's nuclear program. Israel and Western nations contend that Tehran is using what it insists is a peaceful nuclear program as a cover for developing the ability to build atomic weapons.

Tough sanctions have been imposed on Iran as punishment for its failure to cooperate with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency to prove the peaceful nature of its drive to enrich uranium to levels that could be used to build a nuclear weapon.

Israel has threatened a military strike against Iranian nuclear installations, but Obama insists there is still time to solve the dispute through diplomacy. He has vowed, however, to stop Tehran from obtaining a nuclear arsenal.

Outside the U.N., Alex Mohammed, 40, a restaurant manager from Chicago, stood next to a mock jail cell with a noose next to it, and a cartoon of Ahmadinejad standing under a series of hanged Iranians' legs and the inscription: "We don't have political prisoners in Iran ? anymore."

"It's getting worse in Iran, because the dictator is taking away more freedoms, including freedom of speech, and jailing journalists," said Mohammed, who has family in Tehran.

Athletics set AL record for striking out the most

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:57 p.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Oakland Athletics have set an American League record for striking out the most in a season.

Chris Carter's strikeout in the second inning Wednesday night at Texas was the team's third of the game and 1,325th this season, one more than the Tampa Bay Rays had in 2007. The A's quickly added to that total when Brandon Moss followed with an inning-ending K.

Oakland already had four strikeouts through two innings, but also had a 5-3 lead at that point against the AL West leaders.

The A's, who have seven games left after Wednesday night, already surpassed their previous strikeout total by more than 100. They had 1,226 in 2008.

Euro zone worries sends shares lower

LONDON (Reuters) - European shares fell sharply and the single currency hit a two-week low on Wednesday as popular opposition within the euro zone to budget austerity measures unnerved investors already worried about a weak global growth outlook.

The market's focus was on Spain and Greece: protesters clashed with police in Madrid on Tuesday as the government prepared to unveil its 2013 budget on Thursday; and Greeks held a general strike as ministers sought to renegotiate a bailout.

The worries over a worsening in the euro zone's financial crisis have contributed to a sharp rise in volatility on equity markets, leading to the worst day since June for the S&P 500 index on Tuesday and subsequent falls across Asia.

"With the demonstrations in Madrid on Tuesday, the euro zone crisis is intensifying again, and this had an immediate impact on U.S. indexes last night," FXCM analyst Nicolas Cheron said.

Also fuelling negative sentiment, Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser said on Tuesday that the Fed's latest monetary stimulus will not do much to boost economic growth or lower unemployment and raises the risk of longer-run inflation.

As a result the MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.7 percent at 332.70 points with Europe's blue chip STOXX 50 <.stoxx50e> opening one percent lower, led by falls in Spanish, Italian and French markets. <.ibex><.ftmib><.fchi/>

The single currency lost 0.3 percent to $1.2863, having dipped to $1.2856 at one point, its lowest level in two weeks.

Borrowing costs for Italy and Spain were also rising sharply after Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said he would not run in an election due next year. Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, also said he would seek an international rescue package - but only if debt financing costs remained too high for too long.

Italian 10-year bond yields were up 9 basis points to 5.2 percent, and equivalent Spanish yields rose 12 basis points to 5.89 percent.

Morning-after pills available to N.Y. high school ... - Big Health Report

morning afterHundreds of New York City high schools students have received morning-after pills since the launch of a program that provides emergency contraception through public school nurses, the city?s health department said on Monday.

Many schools around the nation have long made condoms available to students but New York health officials said they believe the city is the first to make hormonal contraceptives available.

The program, which started last year and now has been instituted at 13 high schools, allows school nurses to give students emergency contraceptive pills, designed to prevent pregnancy following unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure if taken within 72 hours. It also provides condoms, birth-control pills and pregnancy testing.

Justin Langer predicts bright Test future for Glenn Maxwell ? Cricket News Update

Australia?s batting coach Justin Langer has backed all-rounder Glenn Maxwell to move upwards in the Australian cricketing hierarchy, claiming the right-hander has the technique to carve out a spot for himself in the Test team.

?... fundamentally he's got a very, very good technique. He plays with a straight bat, he's got very fast hands and he's quite a student of the game,? observed Langer. ?He's going to be a good player. I love his attitude. I hope he gets six hundreds to really push his name up (for Tests).?

Currently in Sri Lanka for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012, Maxwell made his debut for the national side earlier this year, during Australia?s limited-overs series played against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates during August/September.

The competent right-handed batsman, who also has the ability to double as a handy part-time off-spinner, was named in the squad on the strength of a successful stint with Hampshire in the 2012 Friends Life t20, and superb domestic performances for Victoria. Among his more prominent outings was the fastest ODI half-ton in Australia's domestic history (50 off 19 deliveries against Tasmania), scored in February 2011.

The 23-year-old continued to impress with the transition to the Australian national side ? he managed composed scores of 38, 28, and an unbeaten 56 during the 3-match ODI series, and subsequently earned a call-up for the World T20 2012 squad.

Despite his success in the shorter formats of the game ? he has 124 runs from 4 ODIs, and 353 runs from 18 list A matches ? Maxwell harbours aspirations of making it to the Test team. With a current record of 770 runs and one century from 11 first-class matches, the 23-year-old has expressed the desire to add to his tally once he returns to Australia, in a bid to earn a call-up to the Test squad.

?I know a lot of people earmarked me as a Twenty20 and one-day player,? Maxwell said. ?Once I get back to Australia and play some first-class cricket I'm hoping I can put some big scores on the board that people just can't refuse.?

LBJ Cadillac Fleetwood limousine to headline Bonhams Simeone ...

Photos courtesy Bonhams.

Among the well-preserved and well-documented cars that Bonhams plans to highlight next month at its auction at the Simeone Automotive Museum in Philadelphia, one Cadillac limousine reportedly carries a particularly fitting piece of provenance this election season: It once served in the White House motor pool, transporting President Lyndon Baines Johnson, Lady Bird Johnson and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

This 1965 Cadillac Series 75 Fleetwood Limousine, chassis number S5154317 and one of just 795 Fleetwood limousines built that year, was purchased new by the U.S. Federal Government to act as White House executive security transportation, according to the Bonhams auction description.?While it was in service, this 243.3-inch long car chauffeured VIPs who were kept comfortable and safe within its 149.8-inch wheelbase. Those VIPs were wafted along by the Cadillac?s 325hp, 390-cu.in. V-8 340hp 429-cu.in. V-8 (even though Bonhams wrote that a 390 powers the limousine, our sources agree with John and Lucas in the comments below that it?s actually a 429).

When it was no longer needed by the government, it was sold to astrologer columnist Jeanne Dixon. As the Bonhams auction description notes, ?Eventually, the stars foretold that it was time to sell the car,? so Dixon subsequently sold it to the current seller?s father, a real estate developer and civic leader in the Washington, D.C., area.

The Cadillac is claimed to be ?in splendid shape for a professional car,? with roughly 83,500 miles on the odometer. Bonhams estimates this car, selling with no reserve, to bring between $15,000 and $20,000.

Bonhams writes that their focus for this auction is ?to offer exceptionally fine and original automobiles for sale, providing collectors with the opportunity to purchase fully documented, original automobiles that have either been sympathetically restored or recently unearthed. Select automotive ephemera, spares and accessories will also be included, allowing collectors a useful resource for accurate restoration of their cars.? Rupert Banner, director of Bonhams Car Department, adds, ?Good, original, unrestored cars are now highly sought after with the values of preserved cars escalating every year. In the last two to three years, auction prices for preserved cars in their original condition have exceeded those for cars that have been restored.?

This auction will have the additional benefit of supporting and encouraging interest in the Simeone Automotive Museum. Museum executive director Frederick Simeone said, ?The Simeone Foundation is pleased to welcome Bonhams to our museum for the first preserved automobile auction of its kind. Our interest is to support the concept that there is another alternative in treating historic cars which have survived the test of time in decent condition: preservation rather than fancy restoration. We encourage the recent greater acceptance of this alternative and hope to highlight the natural beauty of cars that wear the same materials and finishes as when they left the factory. Bonhams? history of dealing with all kinds of important historic art makes them ideal to appreciate such a venture.?

That sounds like a cause?our editor-in-chief has been supporting for years.

The auction takes place October 6-8, with admission to the auction on Monday, October 8, by catalog only. For more information, visit Bonhams.com.

RI owner of cussing cockatoo appealing noise fine

(AP) ? The owner of a foul-mouthed cockatoo in Rhode Island who was slapped with a $15 fine for violating a noise ordinance is appealing.

The Providence Journal reports (bit.ly/RUIVG4) that Warwick resident Lynne Taylor is appealing to a state court a fine imposed by a municipal judge. The judge said Taylor had broken a local law that prohibits residents from letting their pets habitually howl, bark or make other noise.

Taylor's lawyer says the ordinance is unconstitutional because it gives no parameters for what noise constitutes a violation. He notes the statute says that if someone is annoyed, it's a public nuisance.

A neighbor accused Taylor's bird of parroting vulgar phrases, cursing and loudly speaking expletives. The neighbor lives with Taylor's ex-husband.

Goodwin Procter Launches MuniBK Municipal Bankruptcy Blog ...

NEW YORK?(BUSINESS WIRE)?

Goodwin
Procter, a national Am Law 50 firm, today announced the launch of MuniBK,
a new blog focused on the growing issue of municipal bankruptcy. MuniBK
provides links to curated news content, analysis and commentary on
issues including municipal bankruptcy law, related public finance
developments, marketplace data and recent Chapter 9 filings by
California municipalities including Stockton, San Bernardino and Mammoth
Lakes as well as other cities across the United States.

The blog is intended to serve as a resource for the wide range of
stakeholders potentially impacted by the municipal financial crisis,
including government agencies, bondholders, unions, creditors, pension
funds, investment banks and insurers.

As municipalities face increasing financial pressure from the
combination of declining state and local revenues and escalating
operating costs and legacy pension obligations, many are considering use
of Chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code to provide fiscal relief. By
statute, protection under Chapter 9 is available not only to political
entities such as towns and counties, but also to public agencies, such
as school districts and municipal authorities, and to so-called
?instrumentalities of the state,? which could potentially include
public-private partnerships and other quasi-governmental entities
utilized in municipal finance transactions.

Among the topics to be examined in blog posts are:

  • Eligibility under Chapter 9 and ongoing court cases related to
determination of eligibility in various legal venues.
  • Examination of the status and legal review of various challenges to
bankruptcy filings in Stockton, Calif., Harrisburg, Penn., and other
    cities.
  • Developments related to the implementation of California?s AB 506
statute, designed to place additional restrictions on the ability of
California municipalities to file for Chapter 9 relief.
  • The impact of municipal bankruptcy on municipal securities markets and
    on public finance alternatives.

?The once unthinkable prospect of municipal bankruptcy is now being
closely examined by many cities in the 29 states that authorize use of
Chapter 9,? said Manny
Grillo, partner and chair of Goodwin Procter?s Financial
Restructuring Practice. ?The potential impact, not only on
municipalities, but on unions, pension funds, bondholders and bond
insurers, as well as many other general unsecured creditors, is
significant and these groups need to understand how these filings could
affect their interests.?

?As the major ratings agencies have recently reported, at least 55 and
perhaps as many as 100 California cities have declared fiscal crises.
Yet, California remains the nation?s largest issuer of municipal debt,
accounting for almost 20 percent of the nation?s municipal bond volume,?
added Lewis
Feldman, partner and chair of Goodwin?s Public
Finance Practice and Los
Angeles office. ?The MuniBK blog will cover the intersecting issues
of public finance, restructurings and Chapter 9 to aggregate information
and developments from here in California and around the country, and
share Goodwin?s analysis of legal and business developments as they
occur.?

Blog contributors will include attorneys from Goodwin Procter?s Corporate,
Financial
Restructuring, and Real
Estate, REITs Real Estate Capital Markets practices as well as
leading academics, policymakers and financiers. The MuniBK Blog is
available at http://blog.munibk.com/.

Wii U region-locked: Nintendo blocks imported games on consoles

Wii U Region-locked

Bringing tears to the eyes of gamers everywhere, Nintendo (NTDOY) has confirmed to CVG?that its upcoming Wii U console and its accompanying Wii U GamePad will be region-locked. To bring everybody up to code, Nintendo, along with Sony (SNE) and Microsoft (MSFT) have had a tradition of preventing video game consoles sold in one region from working with video game software from another region. Every home console Nintendo has released since the original Nintendo Entertainment System has been region-locked, as well as its 3DS handheld lineup. The exception to the rule was the DS, which has gone on to sell more than?152 million units worldwide as of July.?The new Wii U console?launches on November 18th?starting at $299.99 for the Basic Set and $349.99 for the Deluxe Set, and?many popular retailers are already reporting that preorders are sold out.
