Lahore: Five men allegedly shaved off the hair and eyebrows of a young woman and paraded her in the streets of a village in Pakistan's Punjab province, police officials said Tuesday.

The incident occurred yesterday in Layyah district, 350 km from Lahore, after the married woman was accused of having "illicit" relations with a man.

According to an FIR registered by police, Parveen Bibi, 25, the wife of Sabir Husain, had a quarrel with her sisters-in-law.

Yesterday, her brothers-in-law Muhammad Pervaiz and Muhammad Zafar and three other men shaved off her hair and eyebrows. They then blackened her face and paraded her through the streets of their village.

Police arrested Parveen's sisters-in-law and a man named Muhammad. The woman?s brothers-in-law are still at large.

Shafiq told police that Parveen had developed "illicit" relations with a man of her neighbourhood.

"We stopped her from meeting him but she continued seeing him," Shafiq, who is related to Parveen, told the police.

Sony announces 16.1MP NEX-5R with Fast Hybrid AF, WiFi and downloadable apps (hands-on video)

Sony's entry-level NEX-C3 was recently updated with the NEX-F3, so it was only a matter of time before the company's mid-range mirrorless model scored a successor of its own. Keeping in line with its familiar naming scheme, the NEX-5R includes a new 16.1-megapixel sensor that's based on the version packaged with the 5N, and boasts low-light sensitivity through ISO 25,600. The new model offers a bevy of new features, however, with many stemming from its new-found ability to connect to the web, as Sony's first mirrorless camera with built-in 802.11 b/g WiFi. Standard remote functionality is included, via the Smart Remote Control app that lets you use an Android or iOS device to snap photos, Direct Upload for sending media to the web, and a typical suite of sharing features, including PC and DLNA access.

The 5R takes connectivity leaps further with PlayMemories Camera Apps, letting you download applications directly to the device, including tools that assist with retouching and sequential shooting. (Sony hasn't confirmed whether firmware updates will be pushed wirelessly as well, but it's a possibility.) With the 5R, the camera maker is targeting current DSLR users who are ready to upgrade but would consider a switch to mirrorless. Digital SLR-like controls will help ease the transition, including a new dial near the shutter release. There's also a new Fast Hybrid AF, which pairs 99 phase-detect AF points with a 25-area contrast system, resulting in noticeable improvements with any lens. There's also 1080/60p video, along with a 10 frames-per-second continuous shooting mode (with AF tracking!). If you were fond of the front-facing self-portrait LCD mode on the F3, you'll be happy to know it's here as well, complete with the downward-facing option included with previous-gen NEX models, but notably absent from the F3.

We took Sony's latest ILC for a quick spin, and noticed improvements immediately, especially when it came to the focusing system -- going side-by-side with the C3, the newer camera was able to focus much more quickly and accurately in low-light, even with the standard (and generally unimpressive) 18-55mm kit lens. Touchscreen functionality was present as well, just as it was on the 5N, though you can navigate all of the menus with dedicated controls, should you wish. We weren't able to test WiFi functionality, but it sounds promising in theory, especially considering the optional apps. We'll be taking a much closer look once Sony releases its NEX-5R in mid-October - the camera will ship in black, silver or white for $650, or $750 with the standard 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. Cricket to offer Muve exclusively on Android plans

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mobile phone carrier Cricket is making its unlimited music service, Muve Music, an exclusive feature of its higher-end phones.

The change is a bid to encourage users of lower-end, basic cellphones to trade up to smartphones, which require more expensive plans. The company will stop offering the service on basic phones to new customers.

Muve Music allows users to download songs from a catalog of millions. The songs cannot be transferred off the phone, and access disappears if a subscriber cancels service. About 600,000 Cricket subscribers now pay an extra $10 a month to get the service.

Starting next month, Muve will be included in all plans for smartphones that use Google's Android operating system. The plans go from $50 a month including 1 gigabyte of data to $70 a month for 5 GB.

Previously, Android phones with unlimited data plans cost $55 a month, or $65 with Muve included. The least expensive non-smartphone plan with Muve cost $55 a month.

As Cricket adds new customers and others leave, the plan could help boost Muve Music's subscriber count.

Cricket, which offers lower-cost, contract-free plans to rival those of the bigger carriers, currently has 5.9 million customers, and 60 percent of them use Android phones.

If those numbers hold steady, subscribers to Muve Music could exceed 3 million in the two years that it generally takes for Cricket's customer base to change over completely. That would make it the largest music subscription plan in the nation.

Both Rhapsody and Spotify, the market leaders in the U.S., currently have about 1 million paying U.S. subscribers each.

The use of Muve does not count against one's data cap. The typical customer downloads about 300 songs and listens to more than 30 hours of music every month, the company said.

Cricket, the brand of Leap Wireless International Inc., saw its subscriber count drop to 5.9 million in the quarter through June, down from 6.2 million in the previous quarter. Leap executives blamed the dip on weak results from national retailers that carry the brand. Leap has its headquarters in San Diego.

Controlling superconductors with light

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A superconductor, which can move electrical energy with no wasteful resistance, is the holy grail of cost-effective, efficient, and "green" power production. Unlike traditional conductors such as copper or silver, which waste power resources and lose energy when they heat up, an ideal superconductor would continuously carry electrical current without losing any power.

But creating a true superconductor is tricky. Though the concept of high temperature superconductors is more than two decades old, finding and controlling the right materials has been a challenge. Now Prof. Yoram Dagan of Tel Aviv University's Department of Physics and Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology has discovered an innovative way to manipulate superconducting materials.

Temperature is a crucial element for superconductors, explains Prof. Dagan -- each material has a critical temperature when it becomes superconducting. But by manipulating different types of light, including UV and visible light, he and his fellow researchers are able to alter the critical temperatures of superconducting materials. This finding adds to a growing toolbox for controlling and improving the technology.

The research has been published in Angewandte Chemie and featured in Nature Nanotechnology.

Shining a light

Scientists have long sought ways to alter the temperature of superconducting materials, making them more practical. One of these methods includes chemical doping, removing or adding ions such as oxygen to alter the critical temperature of the material. But Prof. Dagan said that he and his fellow researchers were inspired to find a simpler way.

In the lab, they put a thin layer, one organic molecule thick, atop a superconducting film, approximately 50 nanometers thick. When researchers shined a light on these molecules, the molecules stretched and changed shape, altering the properties of the superconducting film -- most importantly, altering the critical temperature at which the material acted as a superconductor.

The researchers tested three separate molecules. The first was able to increase the critical temperature of the superconducting film. With the second molecule, they found that shining an ultraviolet light heightened the material's critical temperature, while visible light lowered it. Finally, with the third molecule, they found that simply by turning a light on, critical temperature was raised -- and lowered again when the light was switched off. Prof. Dagan calls this discovery a new "knob" for controlling the temperature of superconducting materials.

Small changes, big impact

The power of this finding is that instead of changing the temperature of the material itself, a more complicated process, the material can remain at the same temperature when the film is altered. This is a small change that results in very large responses from devices, says Prof. Dagan: "It's a strong response for a small amount of light."

One of the potential future applications of this finding might be a "non-dissipated memory," which would be able to save data and run continuously without generating heat and wasting energy.

Does evangelical support for Mitt Romney require them evangelicals elevate political partisanship over theological integrity? ?Does this show that evangelicals are willing to compromise their core theological beliefs in service to their political agenda?

I don?t think so ? but some have suggested it does. ?As the Republican national convention is underway, it?s worth revisiting this issue:

What?s surprising in 2012 is the relative lack of anxiety on the other [non-Mormon] side, among evangelicals who for years considered Mormonism a ?cult? that was to be feared, not embraced.

In fact, the relative ambivalence among prominent evangelicals about this new ?Mormon moment? ? and the fact that Romney?s campaign could mainstream Mormonism right into the Oval Office ? could radically shift the dynamics on America?s political and religious landscape.

My friend and Patheos blogger Scot McKnight?said that Merritt ?nails it.? ?He goes on: ?the evangelical voice has grown strangely silent on Romney?s Mormon faith, and it is for one reason: politics too often matters more.?

I disagree. ?Conservative evangelicals (progressive evangelicals are another matter, of course) are supporting Romney because they?re showing a measure of political maturity.

First of all, evangelicals like myself who supported Romney throughout the primary know that other evangelicals were hardly holding their fire when it comes to Mitt?s Mormonism. ?I can?t tell you how many emails and messages I received informing me that Mormonism is a cult and that supporting Romney for the GOP candidacy was doing the devil?s work. ?Robert Jeffress is commonly cited as the voice of the evangelical extreme on this issue,?but while I stringently disagreed with labeling Mormonism a ?cult,? what Jeffress articulated at the Values Voters Summit in 2011 was a reasonable position: Given two equally qualified conservatives candidates, one Mormon and the other evangelical, he would prefer an evangelical. ?But Jeffress made clear even then that, were Romney to win the nomination, he would have Jeffress? full support over against Barack Obama.

Let?s not forget that some Christian conservatives were so concerned by what looked like the increasingly likely prospect of a Romney presidency that they rallied in a Texas conclave in order to come to a consensus on an alternative to support. ?While Romney?s representatives were invited, the conclave was a microcosm of the primary, where social conservatives lurched from one bad candidate to another, in search of a Not-Mitt to support.

Once he won the primary, however, was it hypocritical of conservative evangelicals then to support Romney? ?Are they showing that they care more about the election of a conservative than the salvation of souls?

Of course not. ?There?s no compelling reason to believe that Mitt?s election would lead more people to convert to Mormonism. ?George W. Bush did not make Methodism more popular, and Barack Obama has not made the United Church of Christ more popular. ?There?s no evidence that John F. Kennedy swelled the ranks of the Mormon church, and no one seemed terribly concerned that Joseph Lieberman as Vice President would lead more people to become Jewish.

Granted, you might say, but Mormonism is on the fringe in a way that Methodism and Catholicism are/were not. ?This would ?mainstream? Mormonism, and thus would lead more people to take Mormonism seriously as a religious option. ?To which I say: So what? ?Let them learn about Mormonism and make a decision. ?I?m not afraid of people learning more about Mormonism and its distinctives from historic Christianity. ?And if Americans learn that Mormons are by and large ordinary and honorable people, that?s a good thing, in my book. ?Besides, a Mitt Romney presidency is just as likely to turn people off from Mormonism as it is to turn them on.

Perhaps evangelicals are supporting Romney because they understand that they?re voting for a President and not a Pontiff. ?Perhaps they?re supporting Mitt for the Presidency because, you know, they actually think he?d be a better President than Romney. ?Seems perfectly reasonable to me. ?While I would be uncomfortable with a satanist in the White House because I do fear that his fundamental values and beliefs would lead him to make decisions I would regard as morally objectionable, I have no reason to believe that the distinctive Mormon christology would lead Romney to make the wrong executive decisions.

Evangelicals are supporting Romney because they?re grownups. ?Many wanted someone else to win the primary, but evangelicals are not merely mashing their sour grapes. ?They?re supporting the man who is, by a hundred miles, a far better man for the White House than Barack Obama. ?We recognize the importance of evicting Obama from the White House; we understand they we?re not endorsing a theological but electing an executive; and we?re prioritizing issues like protecting the unborn and rebuilding a flourishing economy and culture over having someone in the White House who thinks about the Trinity in the same way we do.

That?s not hypocrisy. ?It?s maturity.

Romney?s speeches at places like Liberty University have made a difference, as Romney has begun to project the kind of full-orbed vision of American renewal, from its moral and cultural roots to its families and communities and businesses and economy, that conservative evangelicals are eager to support. ?Obama?s decisions and statements with regard to the HHS mandate and same-sex marriage have only strengthened evangelical support for Romney as well.

In the last analysis, evangelicals find themselves facing in this election just as they have for two generations this inexorable logic: (a) Abortion is the supreme moral issue of our time. ?(b) The Democratic Party is unequivocally the party of abortion. ?(c) Electing a Democrat (even a pro-life one, which Obama is not) is strengthening the party of abortion and prolonging the abortion regime in America. ?(d) Ergo, the only hope for serious progress on the abortion issue is in electing Republicans.

But it?s not only the abortion issue. ?On many issues, Romney gives conservative evangelicals the best chance for progress. ?When you consider the fact that he is also a man of extraordinary personal integrity, even more remarkable intelligence and competency, and an extremely successful business leader with precisely the kind of economic experience this country needs, there?s no question why conservative evangelicals would support Romney. ?Because they?re not stupid.

The Broncos' onside kick backfired when Matthew Willis touched the ball about a yard early, and Smith found tight end Vernon Davis all alone along the left sideline for a 49-yard score. Then, Hanie underthrew Decker and former Broncos cornerback Perrish Cox intercepted at midfield. That led to Akers' first field goal, from 33 yards out.

Hanie threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Dreessen that made it 24-10 at halftime.

Smith finished 5 of 7 for 69 yards, but his pocket of protection was much better than it had been during the preseason. He was sacked just once.
