Always On Real-Time Access ? FiRE: The Future of Mobile Computing
Last week i had the good fortune of moderating a panel discussion about the future of mobile computing with three really smart CTOs - Henry Tirri, Executive Vice President and CTO, Nokia; James Barrese, CTO, PayPal; and Gavin Michael, Chief Technology Innovation Officer, Accenture.
Courtesy of SNS (original piece here), the summary of the discussion:
HT: Mobile devices use different kinds of connectivity. Unlicensed bandwidth connectivity are higher ids associated with services like Facebook, Twitter. Connectivity doesn?t allow you to swap back and forth between the services.
Tying ID to device vs. tying it to SIM card.
JB: Huge opportunity to decrease friction when consumers try to pay merchants. See huge opportunity to build a digital ID that allows consumers to pay without even taking out their wallet, through digital recognition.
GM: Eventually we will be able to take ID data and use it to create a highly-individualized treatment of the customer. The problem now is that we don?t have the capacity yet. It?s starting, but it?s very small steps. No infrastructure yet.
?Who owns the data? will be a seminal challenge. At the moment there?s no working model, although people are realizing that they have to give up privacy in order to participate in this.
CS: Will different form factors emerge in 5 years?
HT: In the future your computer will consist of multiple devices, will accelerate the evolution. Energy consumption will become a factor. Using small devices that use very little energy to do smaller tasks and a higher variance of devices.
Next generation of computers have individual components that can be used separately, but when you put them together, they work as a whole.
JB: Explosion of innovation offline has met Amazon?s retail choice. Those walking around with devices in their pockets have apps that companies are using to track them.
DM: Consumers are more about tech they?re carrying. Empowered consumers are coming to work for the tech companies and demanding the same capabilities from their enterprise. Using sensor information differently to manage resources, maintenance in a different way. Mobile is affecting deep verticals as well as horizontals.
CS: Where is home automation headed in 5 years?
HT: From a tech perspective, a lot of this can be easily done now, in a cost-effective way: sensors that measure environment, etc.
There has to be some other incentives also. Understanding what people are willing to learn is the key to the status of home mobile. Technologically, it?s not a problem. But it produces a new value chain. Who will take care of and pay for maintenance of sensors? What if they take out your neighbors tv (radio-based)? It will take much longer than 5 years at a wide spectrum, but some user cases may come much earlier.
CS: Ecosystems and platforms:
JB: We?re seeing the full digitization of money and we need key operators to streamline the experience.
CS: Will platforms matter as much in 5 years?
GM: I think there will be two or three that dominate. Platforms will be doing everything they can to bring developers onto their devices. Our view of platforms will broaden. Some will be key in mobile. Others will focus on home automation, etc.
HT: Catastrophe happens when surges are unexpected or vice versa. Energy will be the fundamental unifying issue and limiting factor.
CS: GIven $10 million to invest, what would you spend it on?
JB: The field of payments is exploding. The whole world is being connected to the Internet and how will they trade with each other?

Jessica Sanchez Wanted To Push 'Girl Power' On 'American Idol'
'I just wanted a girl to win this year so bad,' the 'Idol' runner-up tells MTV News of losing to Phillip Phillips.
By James Montgomery
Jessica Sanchez
Photo: MTV News
To hear her tell it, Jessica Sanchez didn't exactly have high hopes heading into last week's "American Idol" finale. In fact, she didn't have any hopes, high or otherwise. Which, given her supreme talent (and diva-riffic pedigree), is sort of surprising.
"I never thought I was going to win," she told MTV News. "And I think at that moment, during the finale, I knew I wasn't going to win, and I was like, 'Let me just sing my songs, let me have fun, let me be in this moment.' Even making it to the finale surprised me. You saw my face!"
Of course, if you ask her to elaborate on just why she felt she had no chance at beating eventual champ Phillip Phillips, she'll mention one thing: "Change Nothing," the (genuinely pretty terrible) "coronation song" she was saddled with during the finale. Simply put, from the moment she first heard the tune, she knew it wasn't the right fit for her. But, as she'd done all season, she was determined to give it her all, no matter what.
"It was confusing, because it was the winning song, and you try to pick a song that you'd want to put out as a single but also that would sound good when you won the competition. ... I felt like I had to sing a vocally strong song but also one that was kind of mainstream, and that was in the middle, kind of," she explained. "And even listening to it, I was telling them, 'Some things have to be changed in this, because this is not completely me.' And when we did that, nothing was really that changed, and that's why it came out like a pop single. I totally agree with Randy [ Jackson]: That song was not me at all. I want to do pop, but, like, just a sprinkle of it, not a whole bucket."
And while Sanchez has nothing but praise for Phillips ("He's a really great talent"), and despite her claims that she never believed she had a shot at the season 11 crown, that doesn't mean she wasn't disappointed by the results. Because she was definitely looking to reverse recent history and win one for the girls.
" 'American Idol' isn't fixed. It really is America, and if America enjoys [male singers], then they do. I'm just here to please my fans, and make music for them. Now that the competition is over, I can do that and be happy with that," she said. "But it's definitely one thing that pushed me to want to really win. ... I was doing it for my family, I was doing it for myself because I loved it, but I just wanted a girl to win this year so bad — even if it wasn't me. It could've been Hollie [Cavanagh] or Skylar [Laine]. But I was just like, 'We gotta show that girl power!' "
From the sound of things, Sanchez is certainly looking to push the "girl power" agenda with her post-"Idol" debut, mentioning the likes of Beyoncé as an inspiration and saying she'd definitely like to move in a more "urban" direction. She's already made up her mind how she plans to approach the project — "I don't want people to just hand me music and be like, 'Here, you sound good on this. Sing it.' I want to be able to say 'This is me,' " she said — and she's definitely gunning for some top-tier talent to contribute to the album.
"This is going to seem odd, but I love Eminem, because he has so much conviction and emotion in the way he raps; every word that he raps, you feel it," she said. "And I think our talents would mesh. So, hopefully, it could happen, and I would just die if he'd collaborate with me!"

Private profit for private good? Can investing in private companies ...
Donor governments and multilateral institutions have provided grants and loans to private companies operating in developing countries for decades. However, since the 1990s the scale of this support has increased dramatically. In 2010 external investments to the private sector by IFIs exceeded $40 billion. By 2015, the amount flowing to the private sector is expected to exceed $100 billion ? making up almost one third of external public finance to developing countries. As global ODA stagnates, several aid agencies have suggested a dramatic scaling up of public finance devoted to supporting private sector investments.
Using ODA for private sector investment is contentious among civil society organisations. Public development finance can play crucial roles. However, it is fundamental that public finance is channelled to the companies and sectors that have least access to private capital markets, hence ensuring that scarce public resources are genuinely additional to private finance. They must also be channelled to firms and sectors that can deliver the best outcomes for the poor, thus ensuring that public development monies are used for intended purposes.
This report assesses whether external (non-domestic) public finance for private investments in the South lives up to promises to provide finance to credit-constrained companies in developing countries and to deliver positive development outcomes. More precisely, it looks into how much development finance goes to the private sector, as opposed to the public sector; which institutions deliver this type of finance and how; which types of companies are benefiting the most from public support; and how development institutions ensure they support responsible investments that contribute to equitable and sustainable development.
For this purpose, Eurodad assessed recent grant and loan trends, and the portfolios of some of the largest multilateral and bilateral development agencies providing public support to private investments in developing countries. Eurodad?s sample included the World Bank International Finance Corporation (IFC), external lending of the European Investment Bank (EIB) through its African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP) investment facility and Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund, and six bilateral DFIs from Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden.

New semYOU Cloud Office Offers 15 Enterprise Apps for Business ...
LOS ANGELES, May 29, 2012 ? Cloud computing is the IT trend du jour, and the term has spawned a variety of definitions and promises from different ?experts.? With its new version of the semYOU Cloud Office (www.semyou.com), scheduled to be launched in late May, app computing system semYOU is taking users beyond the hype by offering businesses a comprehensive, flexible cloud-based enterprise office system based on software-as-a-service.
Now businesses that need software for human resources, project, task, scheduling management and more can gain access to required applications by simply pointing and clicking. The new semYOU Cloud Office is a complete software infrastructure for small or large companies that want to be flexible, are working globally and collaborate with different partners worldwide.
?In less than three minutes, a business can make the whole software infrastructure of semYou available for individual users, teams, projects or the whole company, complete with an administration suite for managing users, groups, rights and licenses, security as well as customization,? said Volker Jahns, CEO of semYOU LLC.
The system provides users with 15 enterprise apps such as Task-Manager, Project-Manager, Project-Timer-Recording and more that all users in the Cloud Office may use. The array of applications makes it possible for IT departments to deploy a full software suite for ongoing projects via the cloud without having to change software infrastructure or increase costs.
?The big advantage of implementing a virtual office via semYOU Cloud Office is that you have the ability to be flexible and scalable for each new situation in your business,? said Jahns. ?Instead of your being stuck with a rigid system architecture that?s dedicated to specific applications, the new enterprise app idea from semYOU is to enable you to use professional apps for each business case, just when you need them.?
An additional benefit is that users do not have to deal with software installations, downloads or any other changes to their computers.
The semYou enterprise app system is designed as a low-cost model, and businesses can create virtual offices for their teams starting at $15 user/month for a minimum duration of one month. That means if 10 individuals use the system?s applications, the business pays $150 for that month, and users are not restricted to the same app.
?With semYOU, the cloud finally gets a face,? stated Jahns. ?We?re demonstrating how the Internet will look tomorrow for business.?

Becoming: Home improvement
Our back door has a western exposure, as does one of our kitchen windows.? The big shade tree out back that helped keep the back of the house cool had to be taken down a few years ago.? Its replacement is years away from being ready to shade the back of the house, so the afternoon sun really warms up the place - and in hot weather, not in a good way.
I have toyed with the idea of a retractable awning across the back of the house, but it's costly, and I've seen lots of negative consumer reviews about durability and customer service problems.? Outside the western kitchen window, I installed a Coolaroo shade, which I lower on sunny afternoons when the temperature is high.? It works really well blocking the heat.
The window in our back door also needs shading, but I don't want to attach a curtain or shade to the door because I like having the view. And because the door swings out instead of in (we changed it to an outswing to give us more room on the small landing), we can't install a storm door to improve energy efficiency in winter or summer.
Step 1: install offset curtain rod.
(Step 1?!? More like steps 1 through 43, with all the pondering, price comparisons of curtain rods,
selection of style, color, and size of the rod,?
figuring out how to avoid covering up our Delft tiles,
finding the tools, deciding the height,?
hesitating over drilling the holes,
hesitating over drilling the holes,
hesitating over drilling the holes...
Step 1 was huge.)
Step 2: find a piece of material, preferably something already on hand, that will cover the window but not the Delft tiles and that will allow a test drive of having a curtain before investing $ and time in something more permanent.
(Step 2 wasn't quite as nerve racking as Step 1 but did involve going to a fabric store and trying to decide what color, style, and pattern of fabric to buy -- and not being able to commit -- then going to a thrift store to buy a sheet or something similar and finding nothing I liked, before deciding to just use an extra sheet from our linen closet, and then remembering this 1-yard piece of upholstery fabric I bought 15 years ago to make pillow covers. Which never got made.)
Step 3: Machine hem the fabric, attach the clip-on rings, thread onto the curtain rod, draw the curtain.
Joy of joys, this thing WORKS!? The heat is blocked! ?And I realized that the neutral tones and simple pattern of the fabric are more pleasing to me than the multitude of colors and patterns I had seriously considered at the fabric store.? Next step may be to line this to improve the heat block.? And then to make a floor length version to draw on winter nights using Warm Window fabric as a liner.??And then...doing the same treatment for winter on the front door, which has a large beveled glass panel and no storm door.
All of this because I saw this picture on blackbird's blog that she found somewhere, and it gave me a solution to provide heat & cold protection without permanently limiting the view.northern mariana islands summer time coolio daylight savings time 2012 ricky rubio day light savings time peter paul and mary

Tim McGraw giving homes, hope to veterans
Mark Humphrey / AP
Tim McGraw in Nashville on May 21.
By Courtney Hazlett
Singer Tim McGraw announced?on Thursday that he?s going to give away 25 mortgage-free houses -- one for each stop on his upcoming ?Brothers of the Sun? tour with Kenny Chesney -- to wounded or needy service members.
The campaign, which kicks off with a Memorial Day concert for military members at the Beacon Theater in New York, was inspired by the close relationships McGraw has with veterans in his life.
?My sister?s a veteran, my uncle?s a veteran, my grandfather was a veteran, one of my best friends is a veteran,? McGraw said in an interview. ?I?ve known people my whole life who are in service to America. And I think in my position to be able to do something like that is probably the ultimate thing. So to be able to go on tour and provide sort of a stable foundation for a veteran and their family is something I really look forward to.?
No doubt, McGraw?s gesture is a fantastic one. Veterans who?ve given so much get homes, and it?s impossible to quantify the impact that greater awareness of veterans' needs could have on their plight. It does however, raise a question: no matter how well intended, how beneficial are these grand gestures? In short, very beneficial, but it?s complicated.
?It?s a fantastic gesture from someone who has done well and wants to support the troops with something far greater than lip service,? Joe Davis, director of public affairs for the Veterans of Foreign Wars told TODAY.com. ?Supporting the troops means impacting lives, and I know this heartfelt donation will tremendously strengthen 25 former military families in their readjustment to civilian life.?
Jon Soltz, Iraq war veteran and chairman of VoteVets.org, emphasizes that McGraw?s donation is wonderful and generous, but points out that such offerings don?t fix some of the more specific issues that impact veterans on a broader scale. ?We hope he (McGraw) uses the opportunity to call attention to the fact that there are thousands of homeless veterans across the US, and in just the past few years, banks have wrongly foreclosed on a large number of our troops,? Soltz says. ?We veterans sincerely thank Tim McGraw for his amazing gift to veterans, and hope he uses this as a springboard for speaking out about the need to not cut Federal funding -- even in these hard economic times -- to help veterans in need.?
Hiring our Heroes: A focus on getting vets back into the workforce
To Soltz?s point, McGraw?s donation does spotlight, but doesn?t specifically address, an incredible housing need among veterans. Between 2008 and 2010, the rate of foreclosure filings in military communities spiked 32 percent, according to USA Today?and data collected from RealtyTrac, a foreclosure research firm. ???
But let?s be fair here: What?s just one person to do? Gary Sinise is often used as an example of a celebrity who displays the ultimate support of veterans. In addition to his dedication to Building Homes for Heroes, which builds homes for severely wounded veterans, the actor supports at least 25 other charities?that point to various other needs via the Gary Sinise Foundation.
?The veterans community has known about Gary Sinise?s dedication for years, and the public is finally aware now, too,? said Paul Rieckhoff, executive director and founder of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. ?But what Tim is doing is a wonderful effort, too. If you can give a veteran a house, then that?s a huge impact.?
Impact aside, the elephant in the room is this: celebrities are often derided for their involvement in causes, especially if their involvement seems less-than-sincere. Ultimately, and importantly, that?s not the case with McGraw.
"He comes from a military family, and has a real connection with veterans. So many campaigns are only awareness and don?t have a monetary value. He has a cultural competency that everyone doesn?t have,? Rieckhoff emphasizes. ?At a time when most folks aren?t doing anything, we should celebrate folks like Tim who are stepping up."

Here?s an interesting novelty I just came across. LiteRays ? LED light-projection glassware and units that can be attached to the base of most types of drinking glasses ? that seem to create an instant party atmosphere.
The interchangeable LiteRays come in two types: a 1? ounce plastic shot glass that fits into an LED LitePod, and a standalone LitePod that can be attached to an existing shot glass or full-sized glass.
The lights change color with each new pressing of the glass and cycle through eight different colors and phasing patterns. Artistic designs and word combinations can be customized to fit birthdays, weddings, sports events, business functions etc.
How so? Well, there?s a transparency film that slips into the bottom unit pod and creates the projected pattern of colors or wording. The LiteRays are designed so anyone can customize their own projections from film transparencies purchased at any office supply store.
The LiteRays product line can be wiped clean and simply stacked and stored after use. Lite Rays sells for $7.99 and are available online.

Available: summer
Fuel economy (estimated city/highway 2.5-liter): 27/38
Competitors: Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6, VW Passat, Subaru Legacy
Powertrain: 2.5-liter I-4, 182 hp at 6000 rpm; 180 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm; 3.5-liter V-6, 270 hp at 6000 rpm; 258 lb-ft at 4400 rpm
What's New: A decade ago, when Nissan launched its sleek third generation Altima, it hedged a bet that many midsize sedan buyers want a more responsive, more fun-to-drive car. That Altima was stylish, responsive, and a real challenger to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. By last year the Altima had become the second-best selling car in the U.S.
With success like that, it's no surprise Nissan didn't dramatically alter the Altima formula. The sleek and swoopy sheet metal is all new, but beneath that skin is largely the same Nissan global "D" architecture used on the outgoing car. The 2013 version rides on an identical 109.3-inch wheelbase but grows ever so slightly in length and track width. Here Nissan follows the path Toyota pioneered with the Camry?this is the first time a new Altima doesn't grow substantially. That's probably because automakers must keep weight down on future vehicles to help them meet upcoming fuel economy standards. In fact, the new Altima is 78 pounds lighter, and a lot of the savings comes from the increased use of high-strength steel and aluminum bumper beams.
To maintain the Altima's status as one of the sportiest midsize sedans, the team at Nissan benchmarked the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C Class, and Audi A4 as their targets for the new car's responsiveness?a tall order. They redesigned the rear multilink suspension and used upscale Sachs dampers. The team also designed "connect bushings" in the newly added lower link that allow the rear wheels to toe-in slightly and control camber, too. It's a more sophisticated rear suspension than many midsizers have.
The hybrid is gone for 2013, and every Altima uses a CVT. To help boost efficiency, 70 percent of the CVTs in both the four-cylinder model (using a belt-drive CVT) and V-6 (using a stronger chain-drive CVT) are all-new. These CVTs use reformulated oil and use less of it in the case, which improves pumping efficiencies and fuel economy.
Nissan redesigned the base four-cylinder to include variable valve timing on both camshafts and a lighter intake manifold. The 2.5-liter gets a boost of 7 hp to 182 and yet delivers (according to Nissan) a whopping 38 mpg on the highway. That's better than the old hybrid?and better than any of Nissan's competitors. We'll have to test that number on our own to see if we can hit it. The venerable 3.5-liter "VQ" V-6 is largely the same as before. Nissan says it didn't opt for a turbocharged four-cylinder like some competitors because of the V-6's prodigious torque, but we suspect it might be because this V-6 will appear as the standard engine in the next Maxima?a car that currently shares the same basic bones. Regardless, the V-6 should make the new Altima one of the quickest cars in the class.
The new Altima packs plenty of optional tech, including Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Moving Object Detection. But you won't need to break the bank to get some very useful tech. Every Altima comes with standard Bluetooth, and Nissan has made its navigation system an option for just $590. That's a great deal.
Tech Tidbit: Stability control is so last year. The trend now is to add more subtle handling assistance using the basic bones of the stability control system. Nissan says the Altima's new Active Understeer Control will brake the inside front wheel proactively in situations where it anticipates the car will push through a corner.
Driving Character: The new Altima is one of the sportiest cars in a sedate crowd. Our V-6, $30,080, 3.5 SL model reminded us more of Nissan's flagship Maxima sedan than of any Altimas before it. This is the top of the Altima range and comes optioned like an Infiniti, with just about every extra, including a heated steering wheel. The chassis tuning of the V-6 Altima is slightly firmer than that of the four-cylinder cars; it really adds to the car's agility.
The chassis is athletic and capable of generating quite a bit of grip, thanks in part to the standard 18-inch tires on V-6 cars. The steering is assisted electrically, but it doesn't feel artificially boosted as some do. However some drivers might find the steering effort to be a bit heavy at lower speeds.
The Altima's V-6 might be unchanged from last year, but it pulls strongly from a stoplight, perhaps because of the more aggressive off-the-line gearing in the CVT. On the highway, the mood is more relaxed. The Altima loafs along at 1600 rpm at 65 mph. It's a quiet ride on the freeway, as Nissan engineered the headliner, carpeting, and floormats for noise absorption. The Altima is quite comfy; the suspension might be sporty but it's not overly stiff. And the interior materials are softest in the most important places, such the center console where our right elbow always rests on a long trip. Speaking of trips, the new color driver-information center between the speedometer and tach (standard on all Altimas) is 4 inches across and will provide navigation instructions, audio information, and even a cool animation of the car itself.
Driver's Grievance: Yes, the CVT provides a seamless thrust of power, especially in V-6 cars, and increased efficiency. But?call us Luddites?we like real gear changes. We'd prefer to have the option of a manual transmission or a more rewarding dual-clutch transmission in a car that bills itself as the enthusiast's choice in the midsize class.
The Bottom Line: The new Altima remains one of the most engaging family sedans, and now its fuel economy approaches 40 mpg on the highway. At that level, Nissan should have no problem attracting the most frugal family-sedan buyers. If you can get hybrid fuel economy without the cost of the battery packs and electric motors, why pay for them?

Gleneden Beach, Oregon: Small Coastal Community Set amid Beachfront State Parks
Located on the central stretch of Oregon's 363-mile coastline, Gleneden Beach is only slightly larger than the resort itself. The tiny windswept town is home to two annual kite festivals and is a good spot for testing the holding power of one?s hairspray. It?s situated between two larger coastal cities, Newport and Lincoln City, both of which abound with opportunities for beachcombing, whale watching, and browsing in boutiques and bookstores. Newport?s Oregon Coast Aquarium features outdoor exhibits where harbor seals, otters, and sea lions frolic in their natural habitats. A 200-foot underwater tunnel provides near 360-degree views of sharks, giant octopi, and other creatures of the deep.

Yankees hold off Royals

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees are still looking to bust out with that big hit. The mood in the clubhouse was much better, though, following a much-needed win.
Robinson Cano homered, Phil Hughes beat Kansas City for the second time this month and New York eked out a 3-2 victory over the Royals on Tuesday night.
Derek Jeter delivered a bases-loaded single that tied the score and New York rallied from an early two-run deficit to snap a three-game skid. Shut out Monday in the series opener, the Yankees (22-21) went 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position - one night after they finished 0 for 13 in those situations for their worst performance with RISP since 1990.
"It wasn't that pretty, but that was a good win," said Rodriguez, who struck out with the bases loaded but combined with Mark Teixeira on a game-saving defensive play. "It felt really good to win a game like this. Sometimes you need a game like this to kind of get you on a roll. Hopefully it's a good sign of things to come. We haven't been winning these kinds of games."
New York, which had lost six of seven to drop into a last-place tie with Boston in the AL East, now has eight hits in its last 79 at-bats (.101) with runners in scoring position.
Hughes (4-5) gave up five hits in six innings while striking out seven, beating Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar (3-5) for the second time in 17 days.
"It seemed like nothing was a walk in the park tonight," Hughes said.
The Yankees caught a break when Mike Moustakas lined into a double play to end the eighth. Rafael Soriano worked the ninth for his third save, retiring Alcides Escobar with a runner on third to end Kansas City's five-game winning streak away from home.
Rodriguez fielded Escobar's grounder behind third base and made a high throw across the diamond. Teixeira stretched out his 6-foot-3 frame and kept his toe on the bag as New York got the call on a bang-bang play.
"I don't think there's many other first basemen in the league that could stretch like that and make that play," Hughes said.
"Had `em all the way," Jeter said.
Cano put the Yankees on the scoreboard with a long solo homer in the fourth, making him 6 for 12 with three home runs and nine RBIs against Hochevar - including a grand slam May 6 in Kansas City.
New York tagged Hochevar for seven runs and seven hits over 2 1-3 innings in that outing and he entered Tuesday night 0-2 with an 8.83 ERA in four career games against the Yankees.
He hung tough this time, coughing up a 2-0 lead but keeping Kansas City in it when the Yankees appeared poised to finally break loose.
Teixeira, batting seventh for the second consecutive game, singled through the shift to start the fifth and went to second when Jeff Francoeur bobbled the ball in right for an error. Russell Martin was grazed by a pitch and Dewayne Wise reached on a perfectly placed bunt single even though the Royals were expecting a sacrifice.
Once again, the Yankees had the bases loaded and none out with big hitters coming up. They came up empty in that situation during Monday night's 6-0 defeat, but not this time.
Jeter dumped an RBI single into right and Curtis Granderson drove in a run with a groundout, giving New York a 3-2 lead.
"We scored a lot of runs right after that and piled on," Jeter said sarcastically.
Cano was intentionally walked to load the bases for Rodriguez, and the Yankees had a chance to really bust it open. But Rodriguez struck out, drawing boos from the crowd of 37,674, and Raul Ibanez went down swinging as well.
New York never managed another baserunner.
"Hoch pitched great. He did a great job in that inning. They didn't really hit the ball hard," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He limited the damage big-time."
Kansas City grabbed an early lead when No. 9 batter Humberto Quintero went the other way on Hughes' hanging curve for an RBI double in the second.
Francoeur added a solo shot in the fourth to make it 2-0, his third homer this season and second in two nights at Yankee Stadium.
Hughes has served up 11 home runs in 47 1-3 innings this year. He has allowed at least one in all nine starts, the longest streak by a Yankees pitcher since Jack McDowell in 1995.
NOTES: Kansas City put 2B Chris Getz on the 15-day disabled list with a ribcage injury and called up LHP Will Smith from Triple-A Omaha. Smith will start the series finale Wednesday night, his major league debut, against LHP Andy Pettitte. Royals RHP Luis Mendoza, originally slated to start Wednesday, is headed to the bullpen as a long man. ... Irving Falu started at 2B and likely will platoon there with Johnny Giavotella while Getz is sidelined, Yost said. ... Yankees closer Mariano Rivera walked through the clubhouse without crutches but said surgery for his torn knee ligament has not been scheduled yet. Rivera said the last time he had a checkup, the blood clot in his calf was still there. He is taking medication for the clot and doing exercises to strengthen the knee for surgery.

Penske Automotive Group, Inc.
What European slowdown? Penske Automotive Group, Inc. (PAG - Analyst Report) recently reported the most profitable first quarter in the auto retailer's history. Earnings are expected to grow in the double digits in 2012. Yet this Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) also has attractive valuations with a forward P/E of just 11.4.
Penske is the second largest auto retailer in the United States measured by revenue. As of Jan 12, 2012, it operated 335 retail automotive franchises handling 42 different brands and 29 collision repair centers.
Headquartered in Michigan, it sells new and used cars, offers financing and insurance products and replacement parts and also provides maintenance and repair services on all of the brands it services.
The company has 166 franchises in 17 states and Puerto Rico and 169 international franchises, mainly in the United Kingdom.
A Record First Quarter
On Apr 25, Penske reported first quarter results and blew by the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 14.6%. Earnings per share were 55 cents compared to the consensus of just 48 cents.
Penske has an impressive earnings surprise streak going. This was the 9th straight earnings surprise.
Sales climbed 17.9% to $3.2 billion due to improvement in total retail unit sales of 18.1% and growth in the company's used-to-new ratio versus last year.
In the United States, unit sales rose 12.3%. Internationally they jumped 30.7%.
Used retail sales were hotter than new, as used gained 26.6% compared to new sales rising just 11.5%.
Same-store sales rose 8.5% in the United States. Even internationally, where you would expect slowing given the global economic challenges, same store sales still managed to rise 5.9%.
Analysts Are Bullish About 2012
In the last 30 days, 11 estimates have been raised for 2012 which has pushed the Zacks Consensus Estimate up 7% to $2.17 from $2.02 in that time.
That is 21% earnings growth as the company earned just $1.80 in 2011.
Shares Hit 5-Year High
After the estimate beat in the first quarter, shares surged to new 5-year highs. They have since retreated slightly as the rest of the stock market has weakened.
But despite the new highs, Penske still has plenty of value.
In addition to a P/E under 15, which is the cut-off I use for value stocks, it also has a price-to-book ratio of 1.9. A P/B ratio under 3.0 usually indicates value.
Penske has other value metrics including a price-to-sales ratio of only 0.2. That is really low. A P/S ratio under 1.0 can mean a company is undervalued. The average P/S ratio of the S&P 500, by comparison, is 1.8.
Penske also rewards shareholders with a dividend, currently yielding 1.8%.
Penske is a way to profit from America's love affair with the car. Investors get value with double digit earnings growth. That is a rare combination.

Outdoor Furniture for a Summer Garden
Article Directory :: Home & Family Articles
The furniture you select for your summer garden should satisfy two main criteria: it should decoratively complement the garden area and it should also be comfortable enough to entice you to spend time in your garden. When it comes to choosing outdoor furniture for a summer garden the choices are vast in number and diverse in price.
If you have a cottage garden or if you simply like vintage style furniture, you would probably be attracted to the charming and somewhat nostalgic beauty of wrought iron furniture. Many wrought iron outdoor chairs feature graceful curves that blend in gently with a cottage garden theme. One of the most popular furniture arrangements involves placing a small table between two delicately designed chairs. A love seat with a wrought iron coffee table or two side tables is also a well-liked grouping. A glider is ideal when there's not enough space for a whole furniture grouping. Wrought iron bistro sets and dining sets allow you to throw an authentic garden party.
It's hard to find a more visually and physically relaxing style of outdoor furniture than all-weather rattan. There's a design to satisfy any decor preference you have. Rattan and casual comfort go hand in hand. That level of comfort extends to the more artistically designed contemporary styles of rattan outdoor furniture. Rattan furniture with well-defined lines and an espresso finish are ideal for a situation where you want your garden decor to correspond with the modern decor inside of your home. Modern and contemporary sets such as a lounge chair with ottoman and accompanying table or an outdoor rattan daybed and side table are just what you need to create the ultimate relaxation retreat in your garden.
Resin outdoor furniture is an affordable and attractive choice for a garden area. It is respected for its durability. It is weather-resistant, fade-resistant and basically maintenance-free. You have a wide variety of colour choices and designs to choose from. Resin outdoor chairs are lightweight and easy to move around in the garden. That can be considered a bonus feature when you want to sit specifically in the sun or shade and it allows you to relax near whichever flowers are most aromatic at the time.
These three types of outdoor furniture can easily be incorporated into any garden design. There are also other options to consider that cover the range from high-end teak furniture to furniture made of PVC, which is one of the most affordable options. Summer gardens should be enjoyed and spending time relaxing in your garden is one of the best ways to get the maximum amount of pleasure from the work you put into designing the garden.
