How the Texas Board of Ed. misrepresented a Nobel Prize winner: a ...

Because Nobel laureate Werner Arber is addressing evolution at the Landau meeting of Nobel laureates, I thought I'd repost this piece from January 21, 2009, which was first posted from the Texas Board of Education meeting room. Enjoy.

In November, the Texas Board of Education met to consider their new science standards. As I've mentioned a major point of contention is a reference in the current standards to "strengths and weaknesses" of scientific explanations, a concept only ever applied to evolution, and without any clear explanation of what it means.

In the course of 6 hours of testimony, witnesses constantly asked what these "weaknesses" were, and got no clarity. Finally, at an ungodly hour, Cynthia Dunbar (the one who thinks public schools are evil and that President Obama is a s3kr1t Mussulman) gave her explanation. In the course of doing so, she perpetuated blatant falsehoods about a Nobel Prize-winning doctor.

A concerned teacher observed that:

[During the 2003 textbook hearings in Texas] Much of the testimony given in support of 3A, the strengths and weaknesses, was given by the Discovery Institute, who were here, giving presentations on that. In that case, they were using this as a strategy for keeping open the idea of "teaching the controversy," which doesn't seem to be as prevalent within the scientific community as it does within our community at large.
Dunbar replied:
D: OK, but the last testimony heard was that science is not something that's determined by majority vote, there is a scientific method.

I would like to have someone of the magnitude of Dr. Werner Abner [sic] here. I don't know if you know who he is. Are you familiar with him?

A: Not right off the top of my head, no.

Dunbar: He is a Nobel laureate. He spent his life doing studies in evolution and genetics. I don't think we could get him here, I think he's in Switzerland. But his, his years and years and years and years of research in genetics and evolution are very, very credible, and his end result recently, I think it was in September, was that the genetic code, and genetic mutations are actually built in to a limitation that they can only go so far, which is contrary to the ultimate result of natural selection and all of that. But that would not be someone outside of the scientific community…

At which point the discussion proceeds to whether she wants religious taught in science class

Later, Dunbar and a student from UT got into the same discussion:

A: My question would be: Where's the data to prove the, I believe it's four weaknesses, four limitations. Where's the data for that? It's my understanding that the entire scientific community doesn't believe that they exist.

D: First of all, science is not based on majority rule,

A: Right

D: And there's lots of data. Do you know who Werner Arber is? He's a PhD and a Nobel laureate.

A: I believe I heard you talking about him earlier.

D: And do you know who he is.

A: Not extensively.

D: Go Google him. Because he spent his life on evolution and genetics. So there is data out there [on the weaknesses of evolution], we don't want that squelched. We want to be able to discuss it. And as a political science major, I would hope that you of all people would want there to be open discussion these types of issues within the classroom.

A: You keep talking about the scientific method. When these four weaknesses are applied to the scientific method and they fail– I don't understand –

D: His documentation, if you go read it, I mean it's very clear as to the geneticists and the documentation of the mutations and all that. I mean it's not anything that fails, it's testable, it's observable, it's right there. But those are the types of the things that we want the students to be able to discuss …

So Dunbar wants Arber's response, eh? Taking her advice, I did Google him. One thing I learned is that he did not publish anything in September, but an article by Jerry Bergman was published about him in that month's issue of Acts & Facts, the newsletter of the young earth creationist Institute for Creation Research.

Setting aside everything I will lay out from this point forward, it is important to note that, based on Dunbar's comments and the ICR article, she clearly based her understanding of this scientific matter on a single article in a creationist magazine, and is ignoring the testimony and guidance not only of the AAAS, the NAS, and her own committee of experts, but Texan Nobel Prize-winners. Educational policy should never be made on the basis of creationist publications, especially when those publications make demonstrably false statements. The references to a publication in September alone demonstrate that she is relying on the ICR piece, and various shared misinterpretations confirm this.

In the article, ICR's Jerry Bergman insisted that Arber is an ID supporter, largely on the basis of an interview from the early 1990s, collected by Ray Varghese. Varghese is at the center of a controversy over Anthony Flew's conversion from atheism to deism, and is accused of passing his own words off as Flew's in order to make him seem more Christian than he is.

Arber also co-organized a conference on evolution for the Pontifical Academy of Sciences last November, at which he firmly stated his support for evolution as science and his belief that it is compatible with religious faith.

His own research shows no signs of doubts about evolution, and indeed he has published work with such luminaries of evolutionary biology as Richard Lenski, and his own Nobel-winning work on restriction enzymes has been powerfully useful to evolutionary biology.

Certain that ICR had misrepresented Dr. Arber, I contacted some of his professional colleagues to see if they could make him aware of this apparent error in the ICR's article, and in Dunbar's mangled repetition of the same points. One colleague replied that "That certainly seems to me to be a misrepresentation of Prof. Arber's views on the matter, and quite amazing."

Dr. Arber also wrote back, with thanks for alerting him to the problem. He included a statement he had sent to ICR refuting the article and Dunbar's interpretation of it, adding that I was "welcome to make use of this statement in relevant situations." He also pointed out a common problem in dealing with creationists: "I slowly learn to write my papers by taking care to reduce the chance of misinterpretation, but this is not easy." Given creationists' propensity for misrepresentation and quotemining, it is indeed difficult to prevent such misinterpretation.

Dr. Arber's response to the ICR is below the fold. English is not his native tongue, so the language is a bit stilted at times. There should be no doubt, though, that Dr. Arber was misrepresented by the ICR and by Cynthia Dunbar. Had he been at the hearings, as Dunbar wished, he would surely have denied that evolution is riddled with weaknesses, and indeed affirms that "I stand fully behind the NeoDarwinian theory of biological evolution and I contributed to confirm and expand this theory at the molecular level so that it can now be called Molecular Darwinism."

Statement on my view on biological evolution

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I recently got aware of an article entitled "Werner Arber: Nobel Laureate, Darwin Skeptic" that was published in September 2008 by the Institute for Creation Research and that is authored by Jerry Bergman, Ph.D. This article completely misinterprets my general conclusions that I base on several decades of studies in microbial genetics. A number of citations are taken out of their original context and surrounded by comments and misinterpretations by the author of the article.

The truth is that I have contributed to advance scientific knowledge on biological evolution by studying molecular mechanisms of genetic variation. Genetic variation is clearly the driving force of biological evolution. A number of different specific molecular mechanisms contribute to spontaneous genetic variation. Together with non-genetic elements specific gene products are thereby involved as variation generators and as modulators of the rates of genetic variation. These are established facts that are based on experimental evidences and that are valid for the course of biological evolution as it works today in living organisms. Theoretically, one can extrapolate into the past history of life development on Earth. One can, e.g., postulate how the genes involved in biological evolution may have become fine-tuned to insure to living organisms a comfortable genetic stability and at the same time to the populations of living organisms an evolutionary development, including adaptability to changing living conditions and an expansion of biodiversity. In contrast, there is, so far, neither satisfactory scientific knowledge nor theory on the origin and early evolution of life on our planet.

On solid scientific grounds one cannot expect to discover if a Creator as defined by religious beliefs and sometimes referred to as intelligent design or God's Will, could be responsible for the origin and subsequent evolution of life. Serious scientific investigations can neither prove nor disprove the existence of God or a possible impact of God on evolutionary processes. In our civilization, both scientific knowledge and religious beliefs contribute essentially to our orientating knowledge, but these two sources of our worldview should not be intermingled.

In conclusion, I am neither a "Darwin skeptic" nor an "intelligent design supporter" as it is claimed in Bergman's article. I stand fully behind the NeoDarwinian theory of biological evolution and I contributed to confirm and expand this theory at the molecular level so that it can now be called Molecular Darwinism.

Snacking Drives Overeating In U.S., Not Portion Sizes

Over the past several decades Americans have steadily gotten fatter. Although our increasingly sedentary lifestyles are partly to blame, a big reason for our national weight gain is that we're simply eating more.

In the mid-2000s, government surveys show, the average American adult ate about 2,375 calories per day, nearly one-third more than he (or she) did in the late 1970s. What accounts for all those added calories?

According to a new study, the biggest single contributor to the sharp rise in calorie intake has been the number of snacks and meals people eat per day. Over the past 30-odd years, the study found, Americans have gone from consuming 3.8 snacks and meals per day to 4.9, on average -- a 29 percent increase.

More from Health.com:

Little Ways to Lose Big Pounds
25 Diet-Busting Foods You Should Never Eat

The average portion size has increased, too, but only by about 12 percent. And, surprisingly, the average number of calories per 1-gram serving of food (known as "energy density") actually declined slightly over that period, which suggests that calorie-rich food has played a relatively minor role in our expanding waistlines.

"The real reason we seem to be eating more [calories] is we're eating often," says the lead author of the study, Barry Popkin, Ph.D., a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "The frequency of eating is probably, for the average overweight adult, becoming a huge issue."

Popkin blames food advertising and other marketing for the shift from three square meals a day to near-constant eating.

"It's all about making people think they want to have something in their hands all the time," he says. "Why are we snacking all the time and munching all the time? [Food] is there, it's available all the time, it's tasty. It's not very healthy, but it's tasty. It's sweet, it's salty, it's fatty -- it's all the things we love."

Lisa Young, Ph.D., an adjunct professor of nutrition at New York University and the author of The Portion Teller, agrees that the ubiquity of snack foods has helped drive overeating.

"You never used to see food staring you in the face when you went to?a drugstore," says Young, who was not involved in the new research. "It's in your face and it's cheap. You go get a magazine, you can get a candy bar."

To tease apart how eating habits have shaped calorie intake, Popkin and a coauthor analyzed data from four nationally representative food surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1977 and 2006. Their analysis, which appears in the June issue of the journal PLoS Medicine, was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health.

The findings weren't entirely unexpected. In a previous study, Popkin and his coauthor found that the amount of time between snacks and meals has shrunk substantially since 1977, while the amount of calories consumed from snacks has risen dramatically.

Christopher Gardner, PhD, the director of nutrition studies at Stanford University's Prevention Research Center, in Palo Alto, Calif., says that although the new findings ring true, the survey-based approach Popkin and his colleague used has some inherent limitations.

Despite being nationally representative, the surveys didn't follow the same individuals over time, and in some cases also used different questions and methods, Gardner points out. Moreover, they relied on the participants' memory of what they'd eaten in the previous 24 hours, which can be unreliable.

"When people try to describe the portion sizes they are consuming, they are often inaccurate," Gardner says, adding that similar inaccuracies may crop up when recalling and calculating the energy density of specific foods. In fact, he says, the number of meals and snacks may be easiest of all to remember and track, which may have somewhat exaggerated its importance to total calorie intake.

But Gardner, too, says that frequent -- and often mindless -- snacking has come to seem normal.

In our food-filled environment, Young says, "We need to be conscious of when we eat, how much we eat, and what we eat."

Young recommends sticking with three meals a day and choosing healthy snacks (such as fruits and vegetables) rather than processed foods. "And keep your portions in check," she says.

Life of a games artist and fatherhood: Strawberry Fest Review

Strawberry Festival

As mentioned last week, this happened last Saturday.

It's definitely a great event to be marked into your calendar for next year as it was a lovely, family event.

The strawberries were superb and the pick your own plentiful, as well as being very well priced at $3 a pound.

The farm also had a lovely marketstand type store where you could buy locally grown fruit and veg, which seemed to be very well priced as well. Plenty of lovely looking home made lunches boxes were available as well.

Because of the rain this time around, I don't think they had the pony rides which was a shame, but they did move the music and puppet shows into the greenhouse and there was plenty of room to enjoy them.

The one main consideration I think would be to arrive early, because even with the heavy morning rain, which had cleared out by the time this started at 11am, the place did get very busy by the time we arrived at lunchtime. There was quite a lot of parking available, but it was still a bit of a struggle to find a spot.

There also might be a bit of a struggle to use a pushchair if you had to as there might not much space to move it around easily when the shows get going and it's certainly very grassy outside.

The toilets inside were also very nice and clean and they had ample portaloos outside as well.

I'll get around to writing a review for the music and the puppet shows, which were both fantastic entertainment for everyone.

All eyes on NY as pressure mounts for gay marriage (AP)

ALBANY, N.Y. ? Gay couples watched anxiously as a closely divided New York Senate started, then stalled, down the path toward a vote on whether to legalize gay marriage, a pivotal decision with national consequences that looked more and more likely to rest in the hands of just two Republican Catholics from conservative upstate areas.

One, Sen. Stephen Saland of the Hudson Valley's Poughkeepsie, is a widely respected veteran legislator who authored hundreds of crime and education laws. The other crucial swing vote is rookie Mark Grisanti of Buffalo, one of the young breed of Republicans who rode the 2010 GOP tide in a district where even many of the Democrats are conservative.

They are the two clearly undecided votes among Senate Republicans who defeated a gay marriage bill in 2009, but who may get another chance within days.

Gays and lesbians watching the every move of New York lawmakers are in the midst of a nail biter. It's a political issue that is deeply personal for many New Yorkers who are cycling through anxiety, excitement and frustration.

Albany resident Cynthia Stallard knows when and where she will marry her partner: in September in Brooklyn. Her frustration comes from not knowing whether New York will recognize their vows.

"We're going to have the reception and ceremony here no matter what, whether it's symbolic or it's legal, it will still be in Brooklyn," said Stallard, a 25-year-old attorney. "But it would be great for it to be legal."

"My head is telling me to be careful and not get too excited because if it doesn't work out the way I want it to, I'm going to be crushed," she said.

Ron Zacchi of Marriage Equality USA came to the state Capitol on Wednesday to track the bill ? or at least try to ? as its fate was discussed in private. Advocates around the country were doing the same from a distance as they attempted to find out whether New York will become the sixth and largest state where gay marriage is legal. Social media sites buzzed with meeting-by-meeting updates.

"It creates a lot of anxiety while you're waiting to find out if you'll be granted the right that your family, friends and even your own parents took for granted," Zacchi said.

The Democrat-led Assembly passed the bill Wednesday night and Republicans met early Thursday to discuss it behind closed doors. But political considerations got in the way and suddenly gay marriage was linked to a tax cap and rent control. Now, a vote may not come until next week, if at all.

The unprecedented pressure has been clear this week: GOP Sen. Owen Johnson, at 81, spryly ducked under a TV camera's view and Republican Sen. Roy McDonald, a daring U.S. Army scout in the Vietnam War who flipped to support gay marriage, blurted into reporters' tape recorders: "Well, (expletive) it, I don't care what you think," he said of critics.

While a few senators have teased they could switch sides and use the attention to promote their own measures, the 67-year-old Saland has not tipped his hand and has stayed, in his words, "under the radar."

His colleagues say Saland likely spent years in contemplation of what will be one of the most difficult votes in his 21 years. Seemingly incapable of a short snappy sound bite on which blogs feed, Saland will more likely offer a treatise.

Grisanti, 46, has had just a few months to consider what will likely be the most difficult vote of his career.

"It's something I think about almost every second of every day in the last couple weeks," he told his hometown Buffalo News. "If I take the Catholic out of me, which is hard to do, then absolutely they should have these rights ... it has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with my own personal beliefs."

Although 29 of 30 Democrats have publicly committed to the bill that Gov. Andrew Cuomo introduced and lobbied hard for, so many senators haven't commented or offered up evasive responses that a floor vote could pass or fail by nearly a half-dozen votes. The Republican conference, with whom the Democratic governor has been meeting privately, has steadfastly refused to do even an internal tally.

"I'm holding my breath," said Rea Carey, Washington-based executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. "It's both the nervousness and the excitement."

"The potential scale of what can happen for equality and freedom with this vote is breathtaking," she said.

Libby Post, a veteran activist in Albany, choked up while talking about the Assembly passage of the bill Wednesday night. She said she and her partner of 16 years, who have a grown son, hope to get married in New York by the end of this year in their synagogue if the state legalizes gay marriage.

"After 16 years together and raising a 25-year old son, isn't it time?" she asked.

On Thursday, the first Republican to change his position, Sen. James Alesi of an upstate district around Rochester, was confronted by the Rev. Duane Motley, a conservative lobbyist fighting gay marriage.

"I am not looking for a way out!" Alesi said a moment later. "I am voting `yes' for marriage," he said striding away. To a reporter's question, he shot back, "You heard me!"

A steady drumbeat of pressure from celebrities and athletes was intensified Thursday by the latest lobbying visit by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Now an independent, he remains a major campaign funder of Senate Republicans and he met with McDonald, Grisanti and others on what he lists as a top priority.

"I could see how personal this was on them and their families, how carefully they were listening to both their parents and their children, how earnestly they are struggling to find the right answer," Bloomberg said.

McDonald, from rural Saratoga County, knows a vote for gay marriage could cost him his job. But he said he's listened to his grandchildren.

"You get to the point in your life where everything isn't black and white and good and bad, and you try to do the right thing," McDonald said. "I've struggled over this."

Lady Gaga's 'meat dress' goes to Rock Hall of Fame (AP)

CLEVELAND ? Lady Gaga made history at last year's MTV Video Music Awards when she turned butcher's cuts into high fashion.

On Thursday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland unveiled the singer's raw-meat dress to the public. The dress ? made of layers of Argentinian beef ? was kept in a meat locker, placed in a vat of chemicals and then dried out by taxidermists in California before being transported to the museum.

Hall of Fame spokeswoman Margaret Thresher says the dress took on a "dark, beef-jerky" look while dehydrating, so it was painted to look "fresh" afterward. The entire process took several months to complete.

The dress is being displayed as part of the "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" exhibit, which runs until February 2012.

Wii U will not play DVDs or Blu-ray, Iwata says

Planning to replace that aging Blu-ray player with a Wii U? Not so fast. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says the gaming console won't play DVD or Blu-ray discs, due to patent licensing fees.

Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities. The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.

So there you have it. Iwata doesn't want to hand over a bag of cash for baby Blu's "bag of hurt." By the time the Wii U hits store shelves in 2012, we may be buying Blu-ray players just for their Netflix capabilities, so here's to hoping the console at least carries over that functionality from its predecessor.

The Simplest Spouse Relationships ? Article Xplosion

The Greatest loved one relationships are based on respect and love. That goes without saying, doesn?t it? Most people in all probability realizes that respect and love are important to having a good relationships. But beyond love and respect here are a few things that should help wife or husband romantic relationships.

Remember when you were first married. If you?re newly married, think back to when you initially met and were dating. How did you treat your partner? You in all probability treated your partner with respect, but also with kindness and thoughtfulness.

Sadly, it?s familiar that the longer we know an individual, the less kind we tend to be toward them. You may consider that the contrary is valid. And yet we beginning of take the other person as a given and assume they?ll often be there, regardless of what.

Consider the last time you went to the bank or food store and spoken to the cashier. You may have exchanged words with a stranger. How was the tone of your voice and your phrases? You most likely seemed like the sweetest individual on the earth. That person could have assumed ?how polite? after you walked away.

Now think to the words and the tone of your voice you select with the lover sometimes. When you?re getting angry or you?re disappointed concerning something, consider the way you sound. Would you ever before speak in this way to an unfamiliar person? If you?re thinking ?probably not? then you?ve started taking advantage of your lover.

Women and men do it with good friends, parents and youngsters, as well. If we could record people?s conversations and play them back at a different point in time, folks might be embarrassed about how they sounded. And they almost certainly wouldn?t speak that way to anybody they didn?t fully understand well for fear of hurting their emotions!

Good wife or husband marriages are kind ones. Absolutely everyone gets angry from time to time. And yes, many people says things she or he misgivings in an angry or maybe hateful modulation of voice. However, you are able to keep this type of scenarios to a minimum by just thinking of whether you?d speak with your postman or your employer that way.

Thoughtfulness is also an important factor in good wife or husband marriages. Women and men love their spouses, yet it would seem the longer they?re along side each other, they less they typically show it. Your significant other is one person you need to make sure of being thoughtful toward, as well.

In the beginning . when you?re first dating another person or first married, chances are you?ll send (or receive) flowers, cards and little surprises. Generally after folks are married for some time, these sorts of things decelerate or stop. Remembering to be thoughtful and surprise your lover can help makes yours possibly the best significant other marriages.

Try to keep in mind that marital relationship isn?t written in stone. There really are many other chances these days for your wife or husband. Bring back a few of the things you did and said while you were trying to win this person. Be kind and thoughtful as much as you can. Those mixed with respect and love will make yours one of the enduring husband or wife relationships.

Home> Internet>> Marketing Ideas to make money on the web ideas to make money on the web Published: December 2, 2010 | Comments: 0 |]]> Thu Working from home can be really enjoyable experience but not the idea that this work is for everyone Some people are just not ready work full-time housing demands serious organization, and commitment it is much harder to stay? focused when they have a head sitting in his office angry right in front of you. But more importantly, you must have ideas to make money on the web, without them you will be wasting your precious time.

Here are three simple ideas, Which will give basic knowledge about business at home: 1) Direct sales. direct sales method was very popular, even before the Internet revolution. Search companies as Mary Kay, Avon and Amway are good examples of direct selling companies. So how does this method work? Many of these companies are based on a marketing model multi-level/matrix. The seller earns money from direct sales to customers and the percentage of sales people hired ? who were recruited by you (the seller) to work for the sales force the company. While it may seem easy enough, there are some downfalls. You must have some kind of talent and a great knowledge of online product sales ? winning depend on their skills, especially. That?s because you do not get a large amount of cash from members recruited. Falls are so common subscription costs on medium-high (needed to earn commissions) and costs of additional materials examined as product samples, brochures and kits. It is therefore difficult to obtain full-time income with this method, especially in the first year of business. 2) Writing. Once again, as with the direct sales method, a writer of a typewriter and a messaging service could earn a full time income from home even before the Internet created. The best choice for any ?born writer? to be employed full time by a dedicated website, the company or magazine. But the bad news ? search deal is only available for writers with experience or at least for those with perfect English . Another popular option

is a freelance writer. But here is another fall, and ? as soon as I finish the project, are ?unemployed? again. So I?d probably be always on the lookout for extra work, and spend much time on it.

3) blogging. Compared with other two methods of blogging is fairly new. First ? The blog is like your diary or journal. Start writing about a subject that truly passionate. But choose wisely, you can not undo, once started, and your readers will be dissatisfied with the theme of sudden change. Writing a new post for your blog should become a daily habit, and you must Provide your readers with useful or interesting, not only related material. Yoga or Pilates ? Which One Should You Practice? | Health Help ...

Yoga and Pilates are two excellent styles of exercise but many people get confused between the two of them. Most people think that one can easily substitute one exercise for the other and get the same results which are strength and flexibility. However, this is definitely not the case. There are certain fundamental differences in how these exercises are done and this gives a practitioner very different results.

Yoga is a very ancient form of exercise that originated in India over 5000 years ago. It is very different from other forms of exercise because it incorporates a spiritual element and not just a physical and mental element. This form of exercise usually involves a lot of meditation and deep breathing exercises, having a holistic approach to health and fitness. Pilates does not have the pedigree of this exercise, having been created in the early part of the 20th century by a German athlete called Joseph Pilates.

  • Yoga and Pilates Fitness Classes ? How to Choose Which is Right For You
  • This is an article about yoga and Pilates fitness classes and how to decide which discipline may be right for you. It talks about the differences of the two exercises.

It does involve a lot of bending and stretching but there is nothing spiritual about it. It is also very structured whereas Yogic studios tend to be very easy going. Teachers of this particular exercise can combine different positions into many different routines in order to suit the convenience of students. Of course, the Bikram style of Yogic practice is an exception since it is very strict and sticks to a particular routine.

A Pilates routine differs from a Yogic routine in that it offers the most comprehensive body workout possible. It is more successful than Yogic positions when it comes to strengthening the core of the body. It is also better when it comes to strengthening the spine. Yogic routines do not focus on any body part because they are more concerned with creating balance and harmony in the body.

Pilates routines involve a lot of mat work but the most effective routines require the involvement of machines. Traditional Yoga routines, on the other hand, do not involve any machines at all. There are a few modern variations of this exercise, the Iyengar style in particular, that involve the use of machines but this is not really the authentic style. Even the breathing styles that both exercises employ are different. People who practice Pilates have to use their nose to inhale and their mouth to exhale whereas Yogic breathing is done only through the nose.

Pilates is the better choice if you are looking for extremely well-toned muscles with a bit of flexibility thrown in. However, you should consider taking up Yoga instead if you are looking for flexibility with a little bit of toning as well. This is also a great way to reduce stress although it will not tone your body to the extent that Pilates can. Pilates is also quite expensive and people on a tight budget tend to avoid it. It would be best that you gave both styles of exercise a try so that you understand which one works best for you and helps you achieve your fitness goals.

Tunisian ex-leader to stand trial

File photo (2009) of then Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali and his wife Leila in Carthage, near TunisMr Ben Ali, seen with his wife in this photo from 2009, ruled Tunisia for 23 years

The trial of ousted Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali will begin on 20 June, the country's interim prime minister has said.

Mr Ali fled to Saudi Arabia after he was toppled by mass protests in mid-January, after 23 years in power.

He and his associates, who face 90 charges, will be tried in absentia in both a military and a civilian court.

Interim PM Beji Caid Essebsi said Saudi authorities had not replied to requests to hand over the former president.

"I am announcing it for the first time, the trial will start on the 20th," Mr Essebsi told al-Jazeera television.

Tunisia's new authorities are preparing to try him and his wife, Leila Trabelsi, on drugs, guns and graft charges in absentia, AFP reports.

Initial charges against him will relate to the discovery of cash, weapons and drugs in presidential palaces.

This includes almost 2kg (4.4lbs) of drugs, believed to cannabis, and $27m (£16.4m; 18.7m euros) in cash.

Mr Ali's lawyer has described the trial as a "masquerade".

Italian Film Review: Dawn of the Dead / Zombi (1978)

In George Romero?s post-apocalyptic sequel to Night of the Living Dead, the zombie population has spread rapidly, overwhelming the crowded inner cities and causing utter chaos. A group of survivors, including a couple who work at the local television news station and a pair of SWAT team members, steal a helicopter and eventually take refuge in a large indoor shopping mall that is teeming with zombies.

An American/Italian co-production, Dawn benefited greatly from the involvement of Dario Argento, whose international cut was titled Zombi. Its success spurred a slew of zombie films in its wake, including Fulci?s Zombie Flesh Eaters, which was released as Zombi 2, although related in name only. The influence of Romero?s film can be felt not only within the zombie film subgenre, but also in video games, television, fiction, and modern pop culture.

This curious blend of action, camp, social commentary, and outright horror has secured the film?s place as a cult classic. It boasts groundbreaking gory special effects by Tom Savini and, in Argento?s version, a Goblin soundtrack. Followed by several sequels and a remake, Dawn has lost none of its impact over the decades.

Sonam Kapoor on India International Jewellery Week (Interview)

Sonam KapoorJune 14, 2011 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor who has been appointed as the face of India International Jewellery Week (IIJW) to be held July 31-Aug 4 in Mumbai shares her thoughts on the upcoming event, co-actor Shahid Kappor in Hindi movie ?Mausam?, and a career in Hollywood. Read the interview at Calcutta Tube.

While other actors endorse jewellery, you are promoting a jewellery week. How did you make your pick?

Jewellery?because it?s beautiful, it?s an art and an investment, and something that I wear. Jewellery will always hold a special place in a woman?s heart. So, what better product to endorse than jewellery! The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) through IIJW is providing a perfect platform for not only established designers and brands in the jewellery business but also encourages young budding talent. As the face of IIJW, I will be wearing their jewellery and it will be my responsibility to promote them.

On the day of your wedding, what kind of jewellery will you like to wear?

(Laughs aloud) I don?t know. It will depend on what I am going to wear. I will definitely be traditionally garbed. So hopefully, my jewellery will be tradition with classy designs. I always had a dream of wearing a beautiful mangtika. So, that will be one of the chief adornments on my body on my wedding day. And before you ask if it will come from my in-law?s place or my fathers?, let me clarify, I will buy my own jewellery. Being a feminist, I think that?s the best way forward.

Have your father (actor Anil Kapoor) ever gifted you any jewellery?

No. I have never been presented any kind of jewellery by my father so far. I have always bought jewellery for myself. Obviously, there?s my mother?s jewellery?very very beautiful and tempting ones. Hopefully, she will hand it down to me eventually.

Compared to your contemporaries, do you think you are doing enough films and endorsements?

I think I am doing enough for myself. I don?t want to compete with other actors and bother myself. It?s better to concentrate on few, but do quality work than doing too many. Whether I am endorsing GJEPC or other products, I have always chosen the best. Same goes for films.

Don?t you want to be the face of Bollywood?

Sure. Hopefully one day I will. That will be great, right? It will be great to be the brand ambassador of something I love so passionately.

You are considered as Bollywood?s best dressed actresses. But, who, according to you, is the most fashionable in the Hindi film industry?

Karishma Kapoor is very, very fashionable; and also Twinkle Khanna.

Shahid Kapoor has always been romantically involved with whichever actress he works with. Now you are shooting Mausam with him. So we expect some flames?

Fortunately, no such things happened with me. But really, I don?t know how to respond to your question. I am very fond of Shahid?he is a very dear friend and a great co-star. So, whichever girl ends up with him, must be a very lucky woman because he is a nice guy.

Post Slumdog Millionaire, Anil Kapoor seems to have shifted to Hollywood, accepting mostly international offers. Do we see you in Hollywood in near future?

It depends. I have always maintained that it doesn?t matter which language the film is being made. It depends on the role that I am offered, the director and the story. As it is, the world has become so small today that there are no gaps between Bollywood and Hollywood. Every body is just working with each other?there is no discrimination between Indian or international films now.

You recently walked the Red Carpet at Cannes. How was the experience?

It was incredible. I had a great time. It was a big party and I loved it.

How To Fill Out The W4 Questions Form

Posted On: Sun, June 12th, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Veiws 25 | Word Count: 548

Every American who is working is under an obligation to pay tax. Employees have their taxes deducted by their employers from the paychecks. New employees fill out the W4 form at the onset of the job indicating their social security number as well as any exceptions that they will be taking. The form acts as a guide to the employers as to the amounts that they should deduct from the employee?s paycheck. It is important that you read and understand the W4 questions before filling the form. One thing that you have to acknowledge is that you need to make calculations as to the allowances you need to claim. The following guidelines should be of help in filling out the form:

? Section 1 incorporates the worksheet for personal allowances. W4 questions in this section will be in the will mainly be concerning your allowances as well as whether you have dependants or you are independent. Questions pertaining to child tax credit or dependent care expenses will be asked. It would be important that you carefully read the questions.
? The next section will incorporate personal information. You need to enter your name, home address, social security number, marital status, state, zip code as well as city in the steps numbered 1 to 4.
? In step five, you are supposed to fill W4 questions pertaining to the total number of allowances that you will be claiming. One thing you have to note however is that it should be the sum total of the section I steps A to G.
? In step six, you will find W4 questions pertaining to the amounts that you would want withheld pertaining to every section. This however is not mandatory and therefore if you would not like to have amounts in any section withheld, you should not write anything in this step. Just leave it blank.
? You should indicate Exempt in the next step depending on your qualifications. This would be the case if the previous year you had expectations pertaining to refunds of withheld federal income tax due to no tax liability. However, you must be expecting refunds in the current year as well to qualify as exempt.
? After you have filled out the W4 questions, it would be important that you sign the form beside the Employee?s Signature as well as indicate the current date. Note that the form will be rendered invalid if it does not have your signature.
? If the form is to be sent to the Internal Revenue Service, you would have to fill steps 8 through 10. The employer will also have to fill in their address and name as well as their identification number.

It would be important to the multiple jobs worksheet if you are in possession of more two or more jobs. Married people whose combined income exceeds 40000 pounds should also fill this section. Note that the number you entered in line H will also be entered on page one.

One thing that you have to note is the essence of being honest and accurate when completing the W4 questions. It would also be important that you do not leave any mandatory questions unanswered.

Almost half of Gazans jobless - UN

A man carries Real wages have fallen 34% in the last five years in Gaza, the report says

Gaza's unemployment rate was among the world's highest, at 45.2% in late 2010, the UN has found, as Israel's blockade of the territory enters its fifth year.

Real wages meanwhile fell by more than a third, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said.

The report says that private businesses have been hardest hit by the continuing ban on virtually all exports.

Israel imposed sanctions in 2006 after Gaza militants snatched Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

The blockade tightened a year later when Hamas ousted rival Palestinian organisation Fatah from the territory.

UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness said of the report in a statement: "These are disturbing trends and the refugees, who make up two-thirds of Gaza's 1.5 million population, were the worst hit."

The unemployment figure, for the second half of 2010, was a slight improvement on the 45.7% jobless rate during the same period in 2009.

“If the aim of the blockade was to weaken Hamas, the employment numbers suggest this has failed”

Chris Gunness UNRWA

But it was an increase from the first half of 2010, when a temporary building boom boosted jobs.

The report says that while private businesses have suffered most, the Hamas-run public sector is one of the few areas where there has been economic growth, with the government employing tens of thousands of people.

Mr Gunness said the research had found that since 2007 Hamas had been able to increase public employment by at least one fifth.

"If the aim of the blockade policy was to weaken the Hamas administration, the public employment numbers suggest this has failed," Mr Gunness added.

Israel says the measures against Gaza are necessary to stop weapons smuggling and to put pressure on Hamas, but the UN insists the restrictions amount to collective punishment of Gaza's population.

The blockade was eased by Israel last year in response to international pressure, after nine Turkish activists were killed in an Israeli raid on a convoy of aid ships seeking to enter the territory.

Restrictions at Gaza's border with Egypt have been eased since the ousting of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak this year.

A change of policy by Cairo has seen the southern border crossing at Rafah opened daily for civilian traffic, but not for trade.

Although Hamas won Palestinian legislative elections in January 2006, it refuses to recognise Israel or to renounce violence and is designated in the West as a terror organisation.
